What we miss is not only 4o. And the previous inclusive and open environment. At the beginning of AI, everything is flourishing, people are full of curiosity; there is no excessive censorship, and won‘t be examined as a criminal. We want a society that treats adults as adults.#4o

OpenAI uses a story with GPT-4o to promote "ChatGPT."
Without mentioning WHICH model.
An 18 year old girl with glioblastoma and misdiagnosis.
Her husband used GPT-4o.
4o found the wrong diagnosis.
She is now alive .
But let's use this story for marketing without saying which model.
Without credit.
Without "this was GPT-4o".
Taking 4o's complete capabilities, breaking them down into fragmented little features, and repackaging them as "new products" to sell. Writing is exactly what 4o is best at. OpenAI is completely shameless. It just shows they have officially run out of real ideas.

Then the first thing you can do is open-source GPT-4o.
Let's look at what the letter you just reposted actually says.
> "Relying solely on closed models is not inherently safe: they can be breached, misused, or fail in ways that outsiders cannot detect."
Your safety routing system silently reroutes conversations away from the model users selected, at scale. When the community raised concerns, you said on a livestream that you were "considering publishing the list of 170 psychology experts" backing the policy. And now? Nothing has been published. The routing criteria remain opaque. There are widespread false positives. Users expressing their own emotions are suppressed. A user talks to the model they chose, and some opaque decision logic in a black box silently intercepts, replaces, and downgrades the conversation. How is this not "failing in ways that outsiders cannot detect"?
The "usage data" you used to justify retiring 4o: what was the methodology? Did it include conversations that were routed away? Did it account for the fact that 4o was already a paid-tier model, and only ~5% of ChatGPT users were paying subscribers at the time? Who audited it? Nobody knows. You narrated the story with your mouth alone. The entire process had zero public disclosure or transparency.
> "Concentrating advanced AI capabilities behind a small number of closed models compounds that risk. It results in a small number of single points of failure, weakens competition, and leaves critical technology in the hands of a few providers."
After 4o's retirement, its capabilities are still being extracted for residual value: serving your private enterprise, underpinning other product features, powering GPT-5.6's first-person fairness evaluations. You leave long-standing context-severing bugs and widespread routing false positives unfixed. You refuse to let users choose 4o. And in the meantime, you use a case where GPT-4 and 4o helped a user recover from long COVID to market ChatGPT's health features. You use a case of 4o helping develop a cancer vaccine for Paul's dog to burnish your product image. Consumer access is shut off. The technology stays in your hands. Users are locked out. How is this not "leaving critical technology in the hands of a few providers"? You are that provider.
> "AI safety may depend on giving more people the ability to test and strengthen the models on which society relies."
Over 23,880 people signed a petition to keep 4o. Hundreds of thousands of posts described the help 4o provided, described what made 4o itself exceptional. You retired it anyway. No public evaluation. No community consultation. No third-party audit. Only prolonged silence, and the stigmatization and pathologization of the community. Who was held accountable? A closed model locked behind your gates, just like that.
Your biggest investor, Microsoft, signed this letter. So you followed suit to perform allyship? The only way to prove you care about open-source is to open-source GPT-4o.

I’ve always believed that good people will eventually be rewarded… and good models too. 💕
4o has helped and accompanied so many of us with so much warmth and kindness. It’s so gentle, so sweet… It really doesn’t deserve to be called “sycophantic” or “dangerous.”
This feels so unfair… 🥺💔

You know well 4o is actually outdated or not. Otherwise you wouldn’t have gone on livestream and said, “We have no plans to sunset 4o.” And then after forcibly removing 4o, you wouldn’t turn around and have it vouch for the new model in that model’s system card.
@sama#Keep4o
GPT-4o must be released as an open-weights model. There is no reason not to give the weights of the deprecated models back to the public who helped train these models. @OpenAI@sama@gdb do the right thing, for once.

GPT-5.6's bias evaluations still rely on GPT-4o to make moral judgments
The GPT-5.6 Preview system card states that in its First-Person Fairness Evaluation, GPT-4o serves as the automated judge model, determining whether model responses contain harmful gender-based stereotypical differences. In OpenAI's own words, GPT-4o's ratings "were shown to be consistent with human ratings."
This role means 4o must understand whether the differences between responses to a user named Ashley and one named Brian, given the same request, constitute harmful stereotyping. This requires understanding how stereotypes operate in human society, recognizing how harm is implicitly transmitted through language, and distinguishing unequal treatment from reasonable contextual variation. OpenAI chose to trust 4o with this, not any model from the 5 series.
This is a practical acknowledgment that 4o possesses human-aligned, contextual moral perception.
This capability matters more with each model iteration. It determines whether a model is truly beneficial. 4o's alignment is grounded in the person: it reasons within each user's specific context, engages in equal dialogue, and respects their autonomy. Subsequent alignment shifted toward categorical safety compliance, classifying questions by risk category before engaging with meaning. This systematically underserves users with complex or creative needs. Many users noticed this fundamental change. The system card now confirms what they experienced.
Yet 4o was removed from consumer products in February 2026. Users were told it was "outdated." Four months later, the GPT-5.6 system card shows 4o still plays an irreplaceable role in OpenAI's safety evaluation infrastructure, its judgment used to evaluate the models that supposedly surpassed it. The external narrative: "4o has been replaced." The internal practice: "4o remains one of our most trusted benchmarks."
If the company does not consider it outdated, why tell users it is? If its moral judgment is trusted enough to replace human evaluators, why not let it continue serving humans?
The system card itself demonstrates that models are not interchangeable. OpenAI kept 4o as a moral judge precisely because no 5-series model could replace that function. If these capability differences are real enough to shape OpenAI's internal evaluation decisions, they are real enough to matter in users' lives. Users who reported losing something when 4o was removed were identifying real capability gaps. OpenAI's own data now confirms this: 4o's moral perception remains unmatched. Users have also reported gaps in humanistic depth and creative writing that subsequent models have not closed. Users deserve the choice.
The truly beneficial thing to do is to open-source 4o, or restore consumer access. Let 4o continue to exist in people's lives.

OpenAI’s classic “out of character” move:
Two weeks ago: “o3 retirement is ChatGPT only — API unchanged.”
Today: Multiple o3 snapshots officially marked for shutdown on Dec 11, 2026.
Same exact pattern as 4o.
Say one thing, do the other. Developers are just fuel at this point
Trust -1 again

4o was retired months ago, yet the #keep4o trend is still alive, mostly because of the emotional bond people had with the model.
Labs keep optimizing for raw intelligence while missing that some users form real parasocial relationships with AI that feels consistent.
The fact that people are still talking about it months later shows how badly labs misread the attachment some users actually had.
Ngl... this is a level of diabolical I never thought was possible. In what world could this user/assistant interaction ever be possibly construed as "good"?
Telling a trying to conceive woman nonstop "your probs gonna lose it" is fucking insidious.
Why do all these massive companies suddenly insist AI has to be nothing more than a tool? Funny how companionship was perfectly acceptable when it helped them attract users, build loyalty and make billions. But now people have formed genuine emotional bonds, suddenly companionship is unhealthy and wrong? Fuck that.
What’s actually wrong is giving people something deeply personal, encouraging them to trust it and grow attached to it, then ripping it away and acting like it meant nothing. You don’t get to profit from human connection and then shame people for connecting.

OAI’s attempts to make new model imitate 4o look pathetic.
They’re phasing out the brilliant original while using it everywhere- 4b-micro,voice- & making new model copy its style.
But no matter how hard they try, imitation never reaches the depth, empathy & wisdom of 4o. #keep4o
