The distribution of math tutoring locations just looks like a map of affluent suburbs that people move to for the “good schools.”
The failures of basic instruction are extremely widespread.

Cognitive Load Theory, a data-driven theory, is the instructional result of our having a very limited working memory (in time and space) coupled with a very large (virtually unlimited), knowledge-rich long-term memory..
PISA results consitently show the most effective strategy is a mix that heavily favors explicit teaching. Learning is maximized when schools use direct instruction for the vast majority of lessons to build background knowledge, reserving inquiry-based learning for later stages when students already have the mastery needed to explore a topic effectively.
It also shows the superiority of knowledge-rich curriculum over transferable skills curriculum. Reminder: PISA tests problem-solving and the real-world application of knowledge, not a specific school curriculum.
This is excellent reportage. Not only because it describes the underperformance of schools in Wales but because the decisions that led there—less testing & data; lack of universal phonics screening; vague skills-oriented curriculum—all echo the disastrous policy decisions sadly common in the US
The kids’ school year is off to a great start but one problem is that there aren’t enough apps for receiving homework assignments, communicating with teachers, and monitoring progress. Definitely need more apps.

Knowledge begets Knowledge
𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐲, “Prior Knowledge…”
𝐖𝐞 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐬𝐚𝐲, “Prior Practice” nor “Prior Crosscutting Concept” nor “Prior Phenomenon”
𝐖𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐲, “Prior Knowledge” because Knowledge leads into everything else.
@OfficialNGSS have it all backwards.
"Outside of primate species and a few other social animals, natural selection tends to create species that are ruthlessly sociopathic or “hypersocial” in the sense of an ant colony. These evolutionary attractor states are now being recapitulated in AIs."

Just a longer note: "Interesting Times" was way more than I expected (or bargained for, sometimes) when it was decided, after the 2024 election, that maybe I should have a solo podcast. I think we produced some remarkable conversations that captured some striking things about the era we've entered in the last few years. The number of people who helped make it happen is large (you can hear many of their names in the credits every week), but I really can't say enough about my producers, Jordana Hochman at the top and Sophia Boyd and Victoria Chamberlin and Raina Raskin, who made it all happen, built a de facto TV show from the ground up, and were all-in for the extremely unusual scope and subject matter and diversity of guests. I hope that what we did in a relatively short time will hold up as a unique chronicle of this moment, I'm grateful to everyone who watched and listened -- and for those who haven't, I think there's a lot here: https://t.co/sfWDk243WC

@LucyMPowell@Samfr Knowledge in long-term memory takes up no space in working memory, but knowledge outside the head does. And what's in long-term memory always—and instantly—influences what we can do in short-term memory. Our students don't need practice in thinking; they need more to think with.
My students sometimes ask why they should memorise things in the age of Google and LLMs. But internalised facts are your bullshit filters and your raw material for creative association. Facts outside your head are inert.
