Europe spent a decade suing Gazprom to change how gas was priced. The lawsuits worked. That legal victory is a big part of why gas costs $1,000 per 1,000 cubic meters today.
The old contracts were multi-decade deals indexed to oil. Rigid, boring, and after the 2008 shale glut, expensive. Spot gas at European hubs traded well below the contract price, so E.ON, RWE, Edison, and Engie dragged Gazprom into arbitration to force hub pricing into the formula. Gazprom fought it for years and lost. By 2020, 87% of its European sales were priced off the hubs.
The IEA ran the numbers. Hub pricing saved Europe about $70 billion between 2010 and 2020.
Then 2021 handed $30 billion of it back in a single year.
Spot pricing assumes many sellers competing at the margin. Europe installed it on a market where one supplier delivered a third of the gas. When Gazprom stopped selling anything beyond contract minimums in 2021, the marginal cubic meter vanished, hub prices went vertical, and 87% of Russian contracts repriced upward automatically. The reform Europe won in court became the transmission belt for the shock.
Storage ran the same play. Gazprom owned Germany's biggest storage site, Rehden. Going into that winter it sat 9.5% full while German sites overall averaged 71%. Germany seized it in 2022.
So "you got what you asked for" is a true story with the middle third deleted. The cheap gas he's nostalgic for lived inside the exact contracts Europe spent ten years escaping, and the price he's gloating about travels through the pricing system his own company was forced to accept.
🔴 MÜSİAD Başkanı Burhan Özdemir:
"Üretimi canlandırmak amacıyla faizleri aşağı çekmek tek başına doğru bir sonuç vermiyor.
Önceki dönemlerde düşük faiz ortamında sağlanan kredilerin önemli bölümü üretim yerine arsa ve servet birikimine yöneldi.
Geçmiş tecrübe bunun test edildiği bir dönem oldu.
Türkiye, kredi imkanlarının bulunduğu dönemlerde teknolojik dönüşüme ve özkaynakların güçlendirilmesine yeterince kaynak ayırmadı.
Sanayicilerin bugün yüksek finansman maliyetleriyle karşı karşıya kalmasının nedenlerini geçmişte de aramak gerekiyor."
BREAKING: Copper prices on the LME have surged to a record $14,533 per ton, now up +47% over the last 12 months.
The surge comes amid a supply shortage with rising demand from data centers, renewable energy, and power grids.
Furthermore, expectations that President Trump will expand tariffs to refined copper imports have pushed US Comex prices above global prices.
This is encouraging traders to ship hundreds of thousands of tons of copper to the US this year to profit from the price difference.
Now, global stockpiles are increasingly concentrated in the US, draining LME inventories to critically low levels and leaving less copper readily available to buyers elsewhere.
Copper's supply crunch is accelerating.
LME bakır 14527,5 dolar/tu ile tarihi zirveyi kırdı, Şanghay bakırı 110 bin yuanı aştı
🔸 Şili Ağustos bakır ihracatı aylık %14 düştü, 4,62 milyar dolarla Temmuz 2025'ten beri en düşük seviyede
🔸 Küresel bakır maden arzı daralıyor, ICSG'ye göre ilk yarıda üretim %1,1 geriledi
