North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper declared the players innocent in April 2007.

Durham prosecutor Mike Nifong was later disbarred for misconduct, including withholding exculpatory DNA evidence.

Cooper’s office declined to charge Mangum. Investigators concluded she “may have actually believed the many different stories that she has been telling.”

In a December 2024 interview from prison (“Let’s Talk with Kat”), she admitted the opposite: “I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t… [I] made up a story that wasn’t true because I wanted validation from people and not from God.” North Carolina’s statute of limitations on perjury is two years, so that admission cannot be prosecuted.

She did serve time for something else. In 2011 she stabbed her boyfriend, Reginald Daye, who died; a jury convicted her of second-degree murder in 2013 and she received 14–18 years. North Carolina released her on February 27, 2026, after roughly 12 years. She is now on post-release supervision in Durham (parole listed as active through late 2026).
