👱♀️ Meet Alice, a final-year PhD candidate at Monash who just submitted her thesis last month!
➗ Alice’s research explores the range of factors shaping how EAL students learn mathematics with instructional videos, such as lecture recordings in higher education.
Her findings offer valuable insights for teaching practice, video design, and future theoretical development.
🔬 Alice’s journey reflects an interdisciplinary path across science and education. She began with a Bachelor of Biomedicine (Neuroscience) at the University of Melbourne, followed by a Master’s in Vision Science. Alongside her studies, she taught and coached hundreds of international students which sparked her passion for teaching.
She completed a Master of Teaching, worked as a mathematics lecturer, and later led digital learning projects during COVID-19, which inspired her to pursue a PhD at Monash. Alice has presented at international conferences, received awards, contributed to research projects and published several papers.
🇨🇳 Alice was born in Guangzhou and having spent the past 20 years in Melbourne, she calls both cities home: one where her story began, and the other where she has grown
into herself.
🎶 Beyond academia, Alice is also a UX designer, videographer, and singer-songwriter. Her latest Mandarin single Meridian (子午线) was released this month and is out on many platforms including Spotify under the name AliceYyyyyu.
☺️ We wish Alice the very best in her future endeavours.

Concentration = amount/volume that’s why smaller table often allows more in-depth discussion 😁! Wanna say a huge thank you for people who came and supported my first Roundtable session!! @herdsa_conf #HERDSA2023
This lovely hand-drawn poster reminds me of my favourite quote “People always find their own ways to do what they really love” ❤️ @herdsa_conf #HERDSA2023
Sharing knowledge and passion through publications is vital, but teaching is equally effective in spreading ideas and positivity. Let’s build teaching capacity alongside research skills in our PhD journey! ☀️
After three years, finally being able to attend the conference in person! Hi Brisbane, and hi HERDSA #HERDSA2023! Looking forward to my 1st roundtable discussion on supporting maths learning with videos for EAL learners. Tomorrow at 1:45pm, Plaza 11 🎉🎉!! Exciting!!☺️
