Some antidepressants can help reduce pain by affecting nerve signals.
•How they work: Antidepressants are often used for depression, but they can also help with pain. Some types, called tricyclic antidepressants, are especially good at treating pain. They work by affecting certain brain chemicals (serotonin and norepinephrine) and blocking sodium channels in nerves.
•Why sodium channels matter: Sodium channels help carry pain signals in the body. By blocking these channels, tricyclic antidepressants can stop pain from being sent to the brain.
•The bottom line: If you're experiencing pain, tricyclic antidepressants might help by blocking pain signals, not just by treating depression.
