TW: Depression/Suicide.
A little over a year ago when I left Art Basel Miami, i got off my plane, walked straight to the train station and tried to kill myself. Can you guess what I felt in those those moments? Relief. The thoughts that were going through my mind weren’t about who would miss me or what i could’ve done differently, they were like a puzzle that I’d been trying to solve my whole life and in that moment i felt like i finally solved the piece. Wasn’t about wanting to die, as a matter of fact quite the opposite, it was about trying to solve something that felt unsolvable and maybe finally figuring it out. Depression for me had never been because i hated life but rather because i love life but felt restricted and unable to experience it the way my heart truly desires. But what’s truly terrifying is how the mind convinces you that the worst path is the right path. Your mind uses your intelligence, emotions and logic against you to create a scenario in which the best solution is to no longer exist. The formula you’re presented with in your head feels like a solution, like the only solution. What a place to be in, to feel like relief must come not from the life you so desperately wish to live but the antithesis of that life that you crave to be apart of. How frightening it is to be human, to be an instrument of creation.
Billionaires don't wake up at 5am. Bus drivers, teachers, nurses, service workers, etc wake up at 5am. Billionaires wake up whenever they want because their wealth doesn't come from their own labor. It comes from the labor of people who will never be billionaires.

The censored scenes in #Joyland made no sense at all. They don't want you to watch a husband and wife hugging innocently but playing Tich Button's trailer with naked actresses and antique dance numbers is perfectly fine? Great to see those two white-washed actresses showing skin.
I have never seen an art-house film from Pakistani film industry which is so unsettling and so uniquely sad. It embodies the loneliness inscribed in our culture as perfectly as Japanese literature does. A rare rare gem! I cannot wait to watch it again!
#Joyland is about the human condition, about profound loneliness, about neglected elderly, woman's right to choose, about societal humiliation for anyone meek, about trans-awareness, about kindness, about language. I'm in awe. I'm shattered & terribly moved. What a masterpiece!
What a remarkable film #Joyland is! What an experience. Do not fall for the controversies. The film is nothing for which it is being slated. Please go watch it! It's unbelievable!
