#NCTMboston19 math walks are interesting ways to inspire projects in math class. What do students notice in the real world that can be interpreted with math? #iteachmath#mtbos#hsmath#linear
Great ways of teaching order of Ops etc exist, but other than saying “practice on your own”, how can I teach these 4th 5th 6th grade standards to HS Algebra II students when I can’t stop class about radical funcs to talk about adding? @normabgordon #iteachmath#mtbos
Did you know tsunami wave speed is related to the depth of an earthquake by a radical function? Developing a project around this concept. Students will find the time to alert ppl to evacuate in different parts of the world! Hope they enjoy it! #LUMathMethods#iteachmath#MTBoS
Problem solving has always been a weak point for my students. So I always need to remind myself of the importance of “wait time”. Those couple of extra seconds are sometimes enough for that one student to make a new connection!#LUMathMethods#iteachmath
@Abaziou @Pat_Iniguez @iteachmathAll @normabgordon I agree. I also allow for students to correct mistakes on tests and quizzes, but in the testing moment, the anxiety seems a barrier to doing their best the first time.
How do you help students deal with test anxiety? It concerns me that it seems to be a growing issue among my HS algebra students!
#mentalhealth#LUmathmethods#iteachmath#mtbos @normabgordon
Me: “there are no wrong answers as long as you justify it well,” a student in class: “that’s not how math works.” We have some work to do to break notions about the rigidity of math! Interesting issues in class that we will continue to unpack! #LUmathmethods#iteachmath#mtbos
@MathWizard77 @normabgordon Ditto @normabgordon with tolerances. I have introduced it before by talking about how they build Olympic swimming pools and the loose tolerances which lead to lots of ties in races. Here’s an article which motivates the question https://t.co/tIY2Vni8P8
@LeeanneBranham Started with “find a number that is 4 steps from 0”. Then gradually added difficulty... “find some number that when 5 is added, you end 3 steps from 0.” Etc. Students can check by marching off their distance. They each also carried small whiteboards.
Introduced solving absolute value eqs using human number line created on lockers in the hallway and some “puzzling” math statements. Got my students moving before we took notes! Hopefully it helps the concept stick with them a bit more deeply. #Lumathmethods#iteachmath#mtbos
Students in HN Alg II did some noticing and wondering about the focus and directrix of a parabola. Thanks @Desmos for sliders on graphs! Made it easy to show the concept of focal distance and transformations! We have great convo! #lumathmethods#iteachmath#mtbos
I’m working on encouraging more productive group work and discussion with my Alg I students. Matchstick puzzles were a nice icebreaker to see some nice creative thought and reasoning! #LUmathmethods#iteachmath#mtbos https://t.co/6f9wXjEWRA
Looking for some engaging ways to introduce absolute value equations to Algebra I students. Ideas or real world applications that have clicked with kids? #LUMathMethods @normabgordon #iteachmath#mtbos
Tried 3-Acts for the first time with my Honors Alg II class today. They’re not yet quite comfortable with the struggle! But they gave it a good try. Any tips? #iteachmath#mtbos#LUMathMethods
Double sided colored cards were helpful today for quick check-ins. Students let me know they were ready with BLUE side up and not yet ready with RED #LUMathMethods#iteachmath#mtbos
Preaching to the choir I'm sure, but just found a great anecdotal article about how twitter is useful for math teachers! #mtbos#iteachmath
