To reduce General Tsadkan’s position to “assimilationist Ethiopianism” is not only intellectually lazy — it is historically dishonest. This is a man who took up arms against the federal government, risking everything — not to settle personal scores, but to resist what he believed was an illegal and genocidal war waged against Tigray. That’s not assimilation. That’s defiance grounded in principle.
The notion that he’s motivated by old grudges against the TPLF is a convenient fiction — one that shields the Front from legitimate critique. If vengeance were his goal, he had countless openings: during the war, in its chaotic aftermath, or by aligning with external forces hostile to TPLF. He did none of that. Instead, he stood with the people, called for reform, and helped shape a civilian alternative. That’s not revenge — that’s responsibility. That’s leadership.
And if what unsettles you is his statement that “Tigray is part of Ethiopia,” or that many Tigrayans still identify as Ethiopian — then debate that. Engage the politics of identity, sovereignty, and national belonging. Those are necessary conversations. But don’t masquerade ideological discomfort as betrayal. To accuse him of undermining Tigray’s justice simply for not endorsing secession is not critique. It’s ideological gatekeeping.
In truth, those who scream betrayal every time someone steps outside the TPLF’s narrative aren’t defending Tigray. They’re defending a monopoly on how Tigray is allowed to think. That’s not justice.
That’s not liberation.
That’s dogma
