@LinkofSunshine I don't have a strong view myself, but the argument is about time to getting water, not the time to arrive at the fire. My understanding is that without the fifth man on the engine, you need a second engine company to get the first hose line operational.
@ByrneHobart Failing the Reagan option, the MTA needs to at least buy out the insane work rules so they can run special Mets trains at less insane marginal cost. The disability stuff is straight fraud.
@ByrneHobart Their best argument on the insane work rules would be something like: "These have been around forever, so the extra 15% is de facto base salary" Of course I'm sure they make an effort to concentrate the work rule bonuses in their pension spiking years
@male_leo_xxvi Both galvanized and epoxy-coated bars are commonly used, though you do have to repair them when you bend or cut them. SS bars are growing in popularity - they're expensive, but in a regime where labor is very expensive, the marginal increase to the overall project cost is minor.
@male_leo_xxvi Yes, rebar corrosion is essentially a classic galvanic cell. Some DOTs are experimenting with wiring in a sacrificial zinc plate to be consumed instead of the rebar. That said, I've never seen uncoated bars used on a new bridge (Northeast US)
@ReichNow The world cup fans would still have to transfer at Secaucus, the lines do not connect. The proposed connector loop between Upper level Secaucus and lower level is still in limbo as far as I can tell. I agree they're handing this terribly
@rubenfromtha5@jmkettle@PaulSkallas They then use the personally section to randomize the large mass of applicants at the top end. Essentially, if they're asking about a good thing, the correct answer is the maximum number and vice versa for any bad thing
@rubenfromtha5@jmkettle@PaulSkallas Sure! For the fdny specifically, the written exam is divided into sections, several are SAT style with one "personality" section. You need to be nearly perfect on the SAT style sections, but they're extremely easy and as such that you can't distinguish yourself by doing well
@jmkettle@PaulSkallas One of the best gigs in the world if you can get it! You may already know, but keep meticulous records on your legal residence in the city. And watch out for the "personality section" of the written exam, this is how they randomize the academic signal
@goblinodds There are no good choices, my reasoning is that I'd prefer a smaller win for the catastrophic guy vs a large win as a narrow win is more likely to constrain his actions, due to his own reelection concerns and by making him appear more vulnerable to the rest of the system.
@__venki__@rev_cap Yes, however that cap is applicable to tier 6 pension members. These employees are almost certainly tier 4 (hired before 7/1/09) and the cap is not applicable
@cremieuxrecueil Fyi, There's been a correction to that figure on JAMA, it's per 100k person-months. I think you're inferring a stock from a flow. You may be underestimating
@BackTheBunny A good friend's Dad used to buy cars based on the $/lb calculation. Every member of the family was driving a Crown Vic, which was apparently far and away the best value (per pound)
@atlanticesque Relatedly, pavement damage is known to scale with axle weight to the fourth power. So a 30% heavier car does nearly 3x the damage to pavement (1.3 power 4).
