In Ralph Bakshi’s animated film The Lord of the Rings (1978), there’s a hilarious little mistake that somehow made it into the final cut. 🎬

During the scene where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are chasing the Orcs, the live-action actor used as the rotoscoping model for Aragorn, Trey Wilson, actually trips over his own sword.

Since the film was heavily based on live-action footage that was then rotoscoped into animation, the animators ended up tracing that exact movement, meaning Aragorn literally trips over his sword in the finished film.

John Hurt provided Aragorn’s voice, while Trey Wilson’s physical performance helped create the character’s animated movements.

Caras Galadhon, the heart of Lothlórien and the home of Galadriel and Celeborn. This golden city was where the Fellowship stayed after entering Lothlórien.

Built high among the enormous mallorn trees, the city was unlike almost anywhere else in Middle-earth. Its name roughly means “City of Trees” in Sindarin, and it was surrounded by a high green wall and a deep moat.

Interestingly, an extended scene introducing the city was included in the Extended Edition of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Haldir leads the Fellowship to a hilltop, where they get their first view of Caras Galadhon. He then says, “Caras Galadhon. The heart of Elvendom on earth.” The scene was ultimately cut from the theatrical version.

The Fellowship of the Ring: The Orcs of Moria Pursue the Fellowship into Lothlórien (Deleted Scene) 🎬

After escaping Moria, the Fellowship was originally chased by the Orcs all the way into the forests of Lothlórien. The sequence was actually filmed, and Peter Jackson later confirmed that most of it still exists.

The idea was to make the Fellowship’s first encounter with the Elves much more difficult. Instead of immediately meeting Haldir and being taken into Lothlórien, the Fellowship would first be pursued by the Moria Orcs. Exhausted, they eventually turn to face them, only for Haldir and the Lothlórien Elves to appear and kill the Orcs with a volley of arrows.

What makes this scene even more interesting is that footage from it appeared in trailers and promotional material before the film’s release. Some of these shots even appeared on the cover of promotional material, making fans wonder where they had gone when they saw the finished film.

Peter Jackson explained that the sequence was ultimately removed because of pacing. They wanted to get the Fellowship through the Lothlórien section as quickly as possible, so the longer version of their arrival - including the Orc attack and the original introduction to Haldir - was cut.

It was never restored for the Extended Edition either, making this one of the most interesting deleted sequences from The Fellowship of the Ring.
