Before the birth of a new brother/sister, young children often experience a mixture of excitement and trepidation.

The reality is that newborns are often significantly less “fun” than billed to their toddler and preschool-aged siblings. Instead of an instant playmate and best friend, newborns require a great deal of parental care, energy, and attention.

Parents can help to ease the transition by teaching siblings about newborn care, maintaining reasonable expectations related to interactions (along with careful supervision) - and above all else - providing time, attention, and reassurance to older children - for whom both the new arrival and the divided attention of caregivers may create anxiety.
