Its governor accused the merchants of espionage, confiscated their goods, and had them executed.

Genghis Khan demanded an explanation.

The response escalated the crisis: Mongol envoys were also mistreated.

In 1219, Genghis Khan launched an invasion.

A commercial dispute had become a war between empires.
