The Alpine Club Library - devoted to mountains, mountaineering and the history of both.
Open to visitors & club members on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays.
You can contact all of these organisations for details about their holdings if you've an interest in mountaineering history. The Alpine Club library is open to the public three days a week - and @mtn_heritage can be visited by appointment.
Today is #InternationalArchivesDay! To celebrate we're highlighting some of the great work done to protect and preserve the mountaineering heritage of Britain! So enjoy this thread highlighting some of our fellow organisations - thanks to @mtn_heritage for organising!
Lastly - Us! The Alpine Club collections cover much of the history of early alpine mountaineering. We hold a wide variety of material including mountain paintings, correspondence and diaries from prominent mountaineers and physical artefacts such as ice axes.
This weekโs #OnlineArtExchange theme is #journeys ๐ท ๐
So we've chosen this watercolour from the Victorian equivalent of a holiday photo album!
Glacier near Colon by Henry George Willink comes from an album of sketches and paintings he made while on his honeymoon in 1880.
Brilliant addition to the library! Thank you @OtherEverests for this copy - looking forward to giving it a read before it goes on the shelf #librarianperks
Today's #OnlineArtExchange is #weather for 'A Weather Eye' at @McManusDundee
We're sharing this picture of cloud rolling in over Lake Geneva (1880) by Henry George Willink.
It's #ExploreYourArchives week!
Today's theme is #Decisions and we're going with this set of signatures in support of the admission of Sally Westmacott - one of the first women to join @thealpineclub in 1974 after the club voted to admit them.
Today's @artukdotorg#OnlineArtExchange, is #landscapes to celebrate 'Leighton and Landscape: Impressions from Nature' @LeightonHouse_
We've picked The Fee Glacier and Alphubel by Hilda Hechle (1886โ1939) - currently on display as part of our exhibition - 'What would Lucy say?'
And if you like today's pick - it's available as a greeting card from the club website! (The club calendar - which this year is paintings from the collection - is also available) https://t.co/rrLh7hzKP5
Today's #OnlineArtExchange is flowers and floral arrangements for Vanessa Bell: A World of Form and Colour @MK_Gallery
Our pick - A Magnolia, by 19th century British botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker - taken from Hooker's 1855 bookย 'Illustrations of Himalayan Plants'.
It's that time of the year again when all the annual journals turn up! The SMC journal is always a good read - and this year we get a brief mention in @simrich99 article about climbing with Catherine Destivelle
Had a fascinating tour of @mtn_heritage as part of @thealpineclub Blencathra weekend. A wonderful collection that's well worth a visit if you're researching mountaineering history.
If you've liked our @artukdotorg#onlineartexchange posts then you might enjoy this year's club calendar- 12 beautiful mountain paintings showcasing some of the best art in the club's collection (including one of the rarely seen Ruskins)
Today's @artukdotorg#onlineartexchange is spooky art
And we have ... nothing.
So enjoy this tranquil painting of the Chateau de Chillon - haunted by Franรงois Bonivard, a 16thC monk who was imprisoned in the castle and inspired Byron to write a terrifying 392 line poem.
