@SpeechUnion@AllisonCGardner as a constituent I sincerely hope you will back the amendment to stop the removal of jury trials for rape trials etc. 3 years is a serious sentence!
126 of the 516 Crown courtrooms in England and Wales are sitting empty today — 24%.
The Government claims the only way to tackle the 80,000-case Crown Court backlog is to slash our right to jury trial. But it’s clear juries aren’t the problem.
The real cause of delay — and the denial of justice to victims — is that courts simply aren’t sitting.
Analysis from the Criminal Bar Association shows that lifting the cap on judicial sitting days has already reduced the backlog significantly.
If the Government were serious about tackling it, they would ensure Crown Courts actually sit on working days.
Jury trials are a fundamental part of our democratic settlement. Criminal trials without juries are a bad idea.
The Government need to pull their finger out and acquire empty public buildings across the country to make sure these can happen in a way that is safe.
@rickygervais Hey @rickygervais
I have a bonkers idea for a comedy sketch or short film. I don't want anything for. It's a bizarre true life scenario my friend is currently experiencing and it's tragic comedy gold. PM me and I will let you know the idiocy of the tragedy.
