Great piece by @MaxChesnes
+ @TB_Times on the threat of SB290 to the future of FL conservation lands. State conservation lands protect habitat for wildlife + public access for Floridians--selling them into private agriculture would be tragic. @AudubonFL

If you hike, paddle, hunt, fish or birdwatch on Florida’s public lands. Pay attention: SB 290/HB 433 includes language that threatens your access to the places we recreate and recharge.
A new bill would create a pipeline where conservation lands are acquired with public dollars — then reviewed for agricultural “suitability” and potentially sold off (though retaining the easement), permanently changing Florida’s conservation programs.

Decades in the making: @AudubonFL Everglades team celebrating the completion of the 55K-acre Picayune Strand CERP project to remove 260 mi of roads + 48 mi of canals, restorimg flow to Rookery Bay NERR & Ten Thousand Islands NWR. Kudos to the @USACEHQ, @SFWMD on this milestone!
Elected representatives have come to Tallahassee to hammer out the budget, hear legislation, and listen to program updates. Bills this year will have dramatic impacts on Florida's water, sprawl, parks and conservation land, and more.

We welcomed the new cohort of Conservation Leadership Initiatives students to the Audubon community at Assembly! With field trips, an inspiring comic workshop with Rosemary Mosco, a career panel, and more, they are ready for their year-long program to launch their careers.
Leadership that listens to the people and plans for the future. Thank you @MayorJerryDemings & Orange County Commission for keeping our rural lands protected and growth smart.
Huge thanks to Mayor Demings and the Orange County Commission for standing firm! By protecting the Rural Boundary, keeping the Lake Pickett safeguards, and defending the 2050 Plan, they put our future, not sprawl, first.
High point in FL budget: $742M for Everglades restoration. Investing in the world's largest ecosystem restoration protects wildlife + people: 9M residents in South Florida depend on the Everglades to combat sea level rise + provide drinking water. @Sen_Albritton@Daniel_PerezFL
Great news!
The applicant has withdrawn their Guana proposal and the item has been removed from the Acquisition and Restoration Council meeting agenda. Stay tuned for updates via our Advocate newsletter: https://t.co/CUE8VfIn8G
The State may have to consider proposals like this, but they don't have to approve them. Florida's conservation lands are meant to be protected. It's "Florida Forever," not "Florida For a Little While."
BREAKING: Responding to a question from @TB_Times, DeSantis just said he intends to sign the bill to prevent golf courses and hotels on state park land.

This past weekend, @CBSSunday Morning featured @AudubonFL's very own Dr. Jerry Lorenz and Kelly Cox in their story tracing the plume trade and Audubon's efforts to protect wading birds. Watch here: https://t.co/fSbcHGAKHO
JUST NOW: Thank you to the Senate Committee on Fiscal Policy & especially @Kathleen4SWFL@jenn_bradley & Sen DonGaetz for voting down amendment that would have changed SB80 to allow golf courses in State Parks! @AudubonFL
Everglades Task Force mtg in DC: @SFWMD will take lead on Blue Shanty project, to relieve high water in WCA 3A faster + improve h2o conveyance south to Everglades NP! Kudos to SFWMD for their initiative-the world's largest ecosystem restoration depends on this kind of teamwork
No time to waste: Audubon cheers @SFWMD seed funding to jumpstart captive breeding for critically endangered Cape Sable Seaside Sparrow. Saving this species from the brink will be a race against time-but today there is a brighter outlook thanks to SFWMD's principled investment.
Congrats to Jim Strickland and Cary & Marcia Lightsey on their induction into the FL Agricultural Hall of Fame! As Audubon partners, they’ve championed sustainable land management, safeguarding wildlife habitat and water resources across Florida’s working lands. Well deserved!
Audubon Florida is pleased to announce that @Gayle_Harrell is the recipient of the 2024 Teddy Roosevelt Award in recognition of her long history of environment leadership.
