One thing that will stick with me from this class is the war on drugs and how it affected the communities that it has. As well as intersectionality and mass incarceration. #socl214
The United States immigration is long & expensive. Despite being a country founded and built by immigrants, we give long application processes and even a lottery where millions of immigrants apply for 50,000 green cards. Less than .5% odds. #SOCL214
I had no idea the immigration process along with the processor getting a visa cost so much. It’s actually quite shocking because I thought it was cheap but timely. It’s also shocking that laws/processes like something as important as this hasn’t gotten better. #socl214
I learned from the video that legal immigration is extremely expensive. As well as it takes 2-4 years to wait to get approved or denied for a green card. Even if all applications fees are paid and is filled out completely, it takes a long time to get approved still. #socl214
I learned that there is over 1 million African American children who have at least one parent who has been incarcerated. They also are very high risk and suffer from depression as well as behavioral problems. #socl214
Redlining was essentially a color coded map that meant green was good and red bad. This affected people with color by not approving them for loans because they were living in these red areas. They didn’t have equal opportunities for selling and rebuying homes as well. #socl214
@MattDrewANTH214 I agree with you! I learned that with Asians and Americans the stigma completely turned around, but not for the better necessarily #socl214
Model minority stood out to me in this video and is something new to me. Asians still suffer from discrimination though they are portrayed as smart, successful as resourceful. Model minority explains that you can’t experience discrimination if you’re successful. #socl214
I learned from today’s video that everyone can have and experience privilege in one way or another. White privilege is more talked about but everyone experiences it. #socl214
What I learned about in this video was that even if a certain hair type isn’t what you “normally” see and are used to, doesn’t mean it’s not beautiful and shouldn’t be embraced. I have naturally wavy hair and I WISH that I had natural curls like them #SOCL214
I never really realized how the white savior complex is portrayed in some movies. It’s very eye open ring and will think about that and compare it with any movie and tv show I see now. #SOCL214
