A concept that will stick with me beyond this class would be mass incarceration. The United States comprises of 1/4 of the worlds prison population. Comes to show how the prison system has stagnated with the efforts of making things better. #socl214
@EphraimW99 It’s crazy how still, today in 2021 this is still the reality of the prison system. Black people in the U.S have a severe disadvantage in having that picture of it being hereditary painted by the population.
In the video “Mass incarceration, visualized” it stated that the rate of incarceration now is about 5X higher than it was historically. This bring to light how much of a corrupt system the prisons are because a big part of why there is mass incarceration is the money. #socl214
@Courtne72753679 @JordyIWNL Yeah I agree, the whole process shouldn’t cost this much at all. It should be in favor of helping people instead of setting people back.
I had no idea the immigration process along with the processor getting a visa cost so much. It’s actually quite shocking because I thought it was cheap but timely. It’s also shocking that laws/processes like something as important as this hasn’t gotten better. #socl214
I learned that Red-lining means that African Americans and minorities can’t get loans to live in houses that are in the “green” section of the neighborhoods. Red-lining is a systematically racists concept to keep minorities out of white neighborhoods. #socl214
I think affirmative action is usually looked down on because people can’t fully comprehend what it means. Some maybe think it’s free handouts rather then assisting minority groups have an equal chance to things that other might already have. #socl214
The minor minority myth devalues the life experience of Asian Americans in America because this myth puts high unrealistic standards and expectations that hurt them. This myth also creates stereotypes that are ridiculous in the eyes of Asians Americans. #socl214
I learned from the video that privilege exists everywhere but most people tend to ignore it. The first step in aiding the damage that privileges have made is to acknowledge that privileges exist. #socl214
In this weeks video, I learned that people have insecurities about their hair even it’s beautiful. People like to subject themselves to the image of others so they fit this unrealistic beauty standard. I’m mixed so I can relate to the hair thing. #socl214
Seeing how films were tweaked in a way that oppressed blacks so that they were portrayed as slaves or “the ones that needed saving” is really disgusting. #socl214
@KieraSimone4 Yeah I found it interesting how black women experience the majority of the weight that comes with discrimination and specifically black women of the LGBTQ community.
Intersectionality seems like a great way to understand all forms of discrimination into one idea. People experience multiple forms of discrimination but just describe it as one form. Intersectionality can help resolve this issue of discrimination #socl214
