Such great advice at #ICRE plenary panel on advocacy about embracing humanity in medical practice. Doctors sometimes hide behind the notion that the “system is broken”. But the system, in part, is us, and the humanity we bring to each interaction is foundational.
Very excited that our article "What does “timely” mean to residents? Challenging feedback assumptions in postgraduate education" has been accepted @pmeded! Great work by frmr @UofT_DoM resident @AlyssaLip cc: @ChrisWatling3
Only got to spend a short time at #ICRE2022 this year. It was SO nice to be back in person. It was invigorating being surrounded by so many invested in the future of medicine. Listening, learning and thinking…Thanks for having me!
@ICREConf#ICRE2022@alyssalip provides insights from a CGT study about optimal feedback among residents:
1) optimal timing of feedback is contextual
2) written feedback requires skill but has much potential to inform
Deciding when the "right moment" is for feedback is complex
She gifted me three novels as I left that rotation (I was so overwhelmed, had no idea what to do, and so I accepted the gifts! ). They were all novels about the resident narrative as they explored a career in medicine. Every narrative is so important!
Something as simple as saying my name was a physical reminder of the human element of practicing medicine. The language we use frames our experiences and affects the narrative. It isn't the patient and the doctor, or the nurse, or the therapist.
I remember taking care of a CF patient once, a long time ago now. I would go in everyday and say "I'm the resident taking care of you today". One day his sister was in the room, and she refused to let me say that. I'd laugh and awkwardly rephrase, "I'm Dr. Lip, or Alyssa".
Mark your calendars: the first anthology of stories about Canadian residents' experiences in medical training will be launching virtually on August 12. Registration info forthcoming on the RDoC website - stay tuned for more!
We did this dance every day for more than a week before I finally got the hang of it. When I finally finished the rotation, she thanked me for taking care of her brother. Turns out she was a professor of #narrativemedicine. She taught me such a valuable lesson that rotation.
Changes happening this week: started fellowship in Toronto, logged back in to give Twitter a twirl, and finally getting a tan after three years in the hospital #residency#hello
@drstanbrook@respandsleepjc However, the n value for those with exacerbations within the last 12 months was much less than the n value for those with no exacerbations (which was more similar across groups). Difficult to interpret underlying risk but certainly a possibility!
@Dr_Gerin_Lajoie and I with #PWESummit co-chairs @AlyssaLip and Aditi Amin from @ResidentDoctors — Thanks for a successful and engaging few days, learning from inter-professional perspectives around building positive work environments across healthcare. @CMA_Docs
Thank you @ResidentDoctors for organizing an excellent summit! Great conversations with 12 different health professional organizations. Look forward to continuing the conversation for promoting positive working environments. @CFMSFEMC
