@seld_on Bullshit, it's not just Romeo and Juliette, like half of Shakespeare's oeuvre tackles romantic love, I'm pretty sure that society placed a value on romantic love.
@BIG_PARMENIDES My great grandfather was had a childless marriage until he went off to fight in WW1 in his late 30s. He came back after the armistice and had my grandfather and great uncle in his 40s, both of whom grew up to be very successful scientists.
@yorksoriginal I'm not going to give you the generic 'you can turn things around at any age' line because I don't know your exact circumstances.
That said, there have been two points in my life where I was absolutely convinced of the same and it turned out not to be true both times.
@sailaunderscore This is true but can also lead to serious heartbreak when you find this dynamic but without the underlying long term compatibility (don't ask me how I know)
@doctoradmiral Obviously Russia is a western country, it's stupid that people think otherwise. Its religion is Greek and its rulers literally called themselves Caesars for centuries.
@woke8yearold Disagree, sure the Classical world is alien in many ways, but the Greeks contain the germs of a lot of things which have continued through to the present day, which are not present in the ancient literary traditions of other cultures.
@JacobAShell Yeah I was thinking it might be that settled barbarians were being included in the numbers here, and they were prone to opportunistically switching between fighting for the Romans and looting the empire themselves depending on circumstances.
@W_T_Han Before I learned Chinese I always found Japanese names much easier to remember, so I think it's also something to do with Chinese being monosylabic.
@woke8yearold when I travel to rural parts of China and talk to locals in 2026 people often ask me if I'm from Xinjiang.
If you could speak Chinese back then pretending to be from a distant province would have been easy.
@Ersatz_Solus Cromwell became a military commander in his 40s after being born again. Mohammed had a similarly productive midlife crisis. Many people give up too early.
