When Mazda engineers successfully fit a fully functional go-kart inside an ordinary suitcase.
In 1991, a group of Mazda engineers created one of the company’s most unusual inventions. Built for an internal design competition called Fantasyard, the “Suitcase Car” started as a standard Samsonite suitcase before being transformed into a fully functional three-wheeled mini vehicle.
Powered by a 33.6cc two-stroke engine producing about 1.7 horsepower, it could reportedly reach speeds of around 30 km/h (19 mph), making it far more than a simple novelty.
What made the project stand out was the attention to detail. The tiny vehicle included working headlights, brakes, a horn, and even carpet lining inside the suitcase. It could also be assembled without tools, unfolding in just a few steps into a drivable go-kart-sized machine. Although it was never meant for production, the Suitcase Car showcased Mazda’s playful engineering culture, proving the company was just as willing to build something purely for the joy of creating it as it was to develop its famous rotary engines and lightweight sports cars.
