Our office has received representations on several occasions regarding the age and attempt restrictions for JKAS aspirants under the Open Merit category.

Before 2018, OM candidates could appear until the age of 37 with no cap on attempts. The subsequent reduction to 32 years and six attempts has significantly narrowed their opportunity to compete.

At a time when opportunities for OM aspirants are already shrinking, there is a strong case for restoring the upper age limit to 37 years and removing the cap on attempts, in line with the broader practice followed by states across India.

The concerns raised by aspirants deserve due consideration by the authorities.

*KAS Age & Attempt Relaxation Issue 2026*

The J&K PSC CCE (JKAS) 2024 have yet again highlighted the systemic marginalization of the Kashmiris through a flawed reservation policy. While there has been a lot of noise around the reservation— there is no talk on the age and attempt relaxation. Lately there has been some news on the age relaxation but that would mean nothing if no relaxation is given on attempts. Dozens of student applications in this regard are eating dust on the government tables as does every initiative of hope in Kashmir.

We all know how the exams of 2025 were conducted by keeping the students in painful anticipation literally till the midnight of the night before the exam. Personally I too didn’t have a pleasant experience while amplifying students’s sorrow. The exam that was conducted wasn’t an exam. It was a sham of an exam. The government of our land bleeds the merit of our young minds by their lack of passion in the nation building exercise. Merit seems to be of no consideration to the government of the day.

It’s time we actively push for a permanent change in the age and attempt criteria from 2026. And that would be pursued by persuading the government through social media mainly on X (Twitter). No good has come out from begging the politicians and officers in the secretariat nor from even peacefully protesting on the ground. Every candidate should push for this post so that an online movement is generated on Twitter.

Here’s a look at the age and attempt criteria in other states of our country :👇🏿

1. Uttar Pradesh

UP-PSC age limit is 21-40 years for general category. There is NO cap on attempts —candidates can appear until they exceed the age limit.

2. Madhya Pradesh PSC (MPPSC SSE)

Candidates must be 21-40 years old, with relaxations for reserved categories. No specific attempt limit exists, as eligibility ties solely to age.

3. Rajasthan PSC (RPSC RAS)

Minimum age is 21 years, upper limit 40 for general, with 5-15 years relaxation for SC/ST/OBC, women, and PwD. Unlimited attempts allowed within age criteria.

4. Bihar PSC (BPSC CCE)

Age ranges from 21-37 years for general males, up to 40 for general females/OBC, and 42 for SC/ST, with further relaxations. NO attempt restrictions beyond age limits.

In all the four cases — which are from India’s biggest states —the age limit stands at 40 with absolutely NO CAP on attempts. But then when it comes to Jammu and Kashmir the age limit has been decided to be 32 and there are only six attempts for the general category. Then there's the reservation policy—which is an insult to the injury.

The Chief Minister isn’t remotely interested in doing anything that delivers any good to Kashmiris even though 90% of his total vote is Kashmiri Muslim vote. Every time you see him in the media — he is either running a marathon or eating lunch at tourism conclaves or hosting fresco dinners in Delhi.

@themirmujeeb JKPSC has made a mess of jkas mains exam with its incomptetency of not being able to normalise mains score & making success in this exam dependent on the kind of paper checker you end up with in gs & optionals.

With no exam calender, attempt linits make no sense, like elsewhere
