Out today in @Nature_NPJ Ocean Sustainability:
Science governs the future of the mesopelagic zone
We find that in the absence of real policy and public contest, scientists are currently the de facto governors of this deep-sea ecosystem

Summary 🧵👇
I enjoyed presenting remotely at the #ICESASC23 today from across the Atlantic. In my talk I argued that thinking in social practices can help improve ocean surveys by revealing the difference between what we say we do and what we *actually* do. Sharing behind the scenes too!
Come and meet #SIIECS members at our stand at the #ICESASC23. SIIECS is the strategic initiative for the integration of early career scientists.
Ask us anything about how to become involved, what we do and meet some other ECS.
@PrateepNayak shares lessons for governance from his COVID lockdown observations of his pet rabbit. We have a lot to learn from how they manage their vulnerability: 360-degree listening, caution, consistency, and even not overeating! #MARE2023
@EmmaJMcKinley sharing a heartwarming retrospective of the #MarSocSciBookClub and opening to a discussion about the importance of support and affinity groups:
The club has been a space where personal support, friendship & kindness coexists with honing critical thinking skills
Unpacking models and data in another great session at #MARE2023:
Riffing on open data pros and cons, data quality, ramifications of analyses, privatisation, securitization, power, equity, and the role of social science in it all: far more happening than numbers and computers!
@NathalieSteins reflects on her time on a collaborative polar expedition: Social science often criticised (and made fun of) for "pointing out the obvious", but that sensitivity comes in handy in inter- and transdisciplinary settings! #MARE2023
🌊On UN World Oceans Day, the tides are changing.
Within ICES, early career scientists are generating a new wave of excitement towards protecting the ocean & the entirety of our blue planet.
How will you change the tide?

Happy #WorldOceansDay2023
@miriamriig@PalmaAquarium Thanks for joining us Miriam - your talk was fun and informative and set an excellent example for the participants! We look forward to seeing more of your work in the future!
That's a wrap for #InterDis23!
From an audacious idea to one of the highlights of my career so far. @daniel_ottmann and a team of #SIIECS legends (pictured) guided an enthusiastic bunch through an excellent program. Many memorable lessons (see pic) and new friends/colleagues!
Organiser @daniel_ottmann closes the presentation session by stressing how incredible it is that these groups produced these outputs so quickly. With such a full program, they only had 7 hours of working time to execute this project from scratch. This is true early-career energy!
The final day of #InterDis23 is here! Through the week, participants have been working on building interdisciplinary project proposals. They started from scratch, as strangers, with a very open framework, and this morning they are presenting their work. Check out their ideas:
The questions demonstrate the #InterDis23 lessons about feasibility (relationships take time), consultation (who decides what ecosystem is vulnerable?), and engagement (raising awareness is only one step). The group answered these question brilliantly!
