🤗 El 1 de junio recibimos la visita de Euromarine School of Ocean Transformation con motivo del congreso #InterDis23. 👩🏼🏫 Para la ocasión, los Ocean Experts de Palma Aquarium prepararon una exposición sobre cómo educamos a nuestros visitantes para preservar la biodiversidad.
Una iniciativa fantastica de #TurismoSostenible, implicando a los pescadores locales en enseñar su trabajo diario. Conservando nuestra cultura y recusos marinos a la vez a traves de reducir el esfuerzo pesquero!

That's a wrap for #InterDis23!
From an audacious idea to one of the highlights of my career so far. @daniel_ottmann and a team of #SIIECS legends (pictured) guided an enthusiastic bunch through an excellent program. Many memorable lessons (see pic) and new friends/colleagues!
The questions demonstrate the #InterDis23 lessons about feasibility (relationships take time), consultation (who decides what ecosystem is vulnerable?), and engagement (raising awareness is only one step). The group answered these question brilliantly!
The final day of #InterDis23 is here! Through the week, participants have been working on building interdisciplinary project proposals. They started from scratch, as strangers, with a very open framework, and this morning they are presenting their work. Check out their ideas:
After the aquarium, there was enough sunshine for a few #InterDis23 people to take an ocean swim. We saw people playing sports, socialising, and relaxing and enjoying this blue space. We also experienced the wellbeing effects after a very stimulating day of ocean learning!

After lunch, we welcome guest speaker @miriamriig, who a comic artist and professional science communicator.
(Yes, degrees in Science Communication are a thing!)
She's sharing the story of making science communication materials with scientists, but from the artist's perspective
And now the #InterDis23 students get free time to just enjoy the aquarium. It's so nice to be in a group that is so full of awe and interest in the sea.
They're all lined up, happier than kids in a candy store! 🥰💙
The final activity for this marathon excursion day is a backstage tour from the Palma Aquarium Ocean Experts. #InterDis23 students learn how they teach members of the public about how the ocean works and what they do in conservation. This includes role playing a turtle rescue!
A different day at #SOCIB headquarters: #ECS participants of Interdisciplinary Ocean Transformation summer school #InterDis23 have learned about the importance of #OceanObservation & #OceanLiteracy from our research and technical staff.

Station 3: Meet the Technology!
We learn about how copious comlicated oceanographic data is collected by the gliders. The next challenge is to use analysis to transform it into something that others can use
#InterDis23 participants are working on developing interdisciplinary projects together as part of the Summer School, so someone asks how to get funding for science (Great Q!)
Debora: Be creative! Ask around, and if you're good at something, don't do it for free (for too long)
@AmandaSchaScha telling our #InterDis23 participants what the work of social scientists involves and how many hats they have to wear before giving us an introduction to scientific storytelling.
She explains that she makes a script for the comic, and elicits comments and suggestions from her scientist. #InterDis23 immediately understands: it's like getting revisions in a publication. Some suggestions are important and necessary, others are pedantic and unhelpful

Part of SOCIB's philosophy is to ensure relevance, so their experts have three tips for the early-career scientists of #InterDis23:
1. Seize opportunities to learn and grow
2. Be brave and ambitious with your projects
3. Remember that the best projects come from collaboration
They have a catalogue of 30 apps and digital tools (e.g. outreach, flooding mapping, sea changes). They also provide open access to data produced by their glider fleet. All #InterDis23 students were given a miniature version as a gift
