Imagine a city in crisis.
A deadly disease has broken out. Hospitals are overwhelmed. Families are terrified. There is no treatment — until one day, a breakthrough comes.
A cure if discovered.
It is prepared in a lab far away and sent by emergency transport into the city. Special vehicles — marked clearly, sirens blazing — carry the life-saving medicine through crowded streets.
Inside those vehicles is hope, survival and life.
People rush to receive the cure.
The medicine works.
The sick recover.
The city begins to breathe again.
But then something strange happens.
Rumors spread.
Old prejudices resurface. Conspiracy theories become the norm.
A few people with megaphones, who love the spotlight and money, start blaming the delivery trucks for the disease.
Crowds gather.
Anger grows.
And instead of protecting the vehicles that brought the cure…
People begin smashing them.
Breaking the windows.
Burning the tires.
Attacking the drivers.
You watch in utter disbelief and shock.
------------------------
Let me ask you something:
What kind of logic is that?
How do you destroy the very vehicle that brought you the cure?
How do you curse the delivery system God used to bring so much hope and blessing?
This is antisemitism.
God chose one people — not because they were superior, not because they were perfect — but because through them He chose to deliver the cure for humanity’s greatest disease: sin.
It was His idea. His way. His right.
Through the Jewish people came:
The Scriptures.
The revelation of the one true God.
The covenants.
The prophets.
And ultimately, the Messiah — the Savior of the world.
They, Israel, were the vehicle.
They carried the promise.
They preserved the Word.
They delivered the Cure (Rom. 9:1-5)
And God is still using Israel to bless the world today.
And yet, instead of gratitude, there is rising hostility.
Instead of honor, hatred.
Instead of blessing, cursing.
That makes no rational sense.
🙋 What's happening in Genesis 15:17-18?
📕 "When the sun had set and it was dark, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch appeared and passed between the divided animals. On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “I give this land to your offspring, from the brook of Egypt to the Euphrates River..."
✅ This ANE covenant cutting ceremony was common during Abram's day. It is also referenced by Jeremiah in 34:18.
🙋 How did it work?
✅ 2 parties would sacrifice an animal, split it apart and then walk between the pieces. As they walked between them, they would say something to the effect of, "If I break this covenant, may it be done to me as we have done to this animal." Serious business. A blood covenant.
🙋 But why didn't Abram walk between the pieces?
✅ Something out of the ordinary happened with God and Abram: God put Abram into a deep sleep. With Abraham asleep, it was impossible for him to walk between the pieces.
🙋 What was happening here?
✅ God took the entire responsibility of the promise upon Himself. He took on the form of a smoking firepot and a flaming torch and passed between the pieces by Himself. This signified that the covenant would be completely conditioned on One party: God alone.
🙋 I forget, what was the promise for?
✅ Land, see v. 18: "On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, “I give this land to your offspring, from the brook of Egypt to the Euphrates River:"
It is for this reason, an unconditional blood covenant by the Faithful Creator, that we expect this promise to one day be realized. God will win. He is faithful.
🙋 That was already fulfilled, right? Under David and Solomon?
✅ The promise is forever. Jeremiah 7:7 and 25:5, written long after David and Solomon, use the Hebrew phrase for forever: "לְמִן־עוֹלָ֖ם וְעַד־עוֹלָֽם" (min olam v'ad olam).
There is simply no stronger phrase in the Hebrew language to indicate the eternality of the covenant. Jeremiah wrote many centuries after the covenant was cut and he, inspired the Holy Spirit, still viewed the covenant as eternal and viable.
🙋 Are there other times in the Bible when this phrase is used?
✅ The only other times this Hebrew phrase is employed is in reference to God's eternal character traits, for example:
📕 Psalm 103:17 uses it to refer to God's eternal lovingkindness.
📕 Psalm 90:2 uses it to refer to God's eternal existence.
📕 Daniel 7:18 uses it to refer to God's eternal kingdom.
✅ Main Point: God gave the land of Israel to the people of Israel as an eternal inheritance. Whether they live on that land is contingent upon His timing, His judgments, His blessings etc. But even in exile, the Jewish people hold the title deed to this piece of land.
It’s the first night of Hanukkah, referenced in the NT as the “Feast of Dedication” (John 10:22.)
Whether you are Jewish or not, I invite you to join me in prayer and in publicly displaying a menorah this year. The Jewish community is reeling from surging antisemitism and now a horrific act of murderous violence in Australia.
We must stand against this demonic scourge of hatred toward God’s chosen people (Deut. 7:6-8; Rom. 11:29.)
🙋♂️ What if every NT reference to Israel were put into one document so we could easily see, compare, find them, etc?
✅ @LifeinMessiah has done just that. The attached video explains the document and the link for free & easy access.
Stewardship VS Ownership
Leaders have to make all kinds of decisions. Many decisions are very important.
Some decisions are less important.
A very important question that each leader, especially ministry leaders, must ask, answer and then live/lead accordingly is this:
Which is more important: the ministry/work one is called to? Or the people doing the work?
Followers have to make all kinds of decisions.
Many are very important.
Some are less important.
A very important question that each follower, especially those in a ministry context, must ask, answer and then live/lead accordingly is this:
Will I follow a leader who values the ministry/work more than they value people/me?
These are very important questions. I’ve served in full-time ministry for about 15 years. I’ve heard, seen and read about way too many leaders who simply use people to accomplish ministry/work. I’ve seen way too many followers allow themselves to be used by leaders because “the cause is worthy.”
An alternate approach is to always view people as more valuable and precious than the ministry/work or the results of the work. People are the most precious resources and they belong to God. They don’t belong to the leader, the church or the agency. They belong to God. They are HIS precious ressources.
Leaders are there to steward what belongs to God, and people are at the top of the hierarchy.
This is what’s been going on for years, even before October 7th Hamas was starving people. Yet, rabid antisemites who lack discernment continue to libel Israel and call for her destruction.
History will remember where you stood.
Long live Israel. 🇮🇱
Hamas continues to deprive the people of Gaza of the humanitarian aid they desperately need. This theft undermines international efforts in support of President Trump’s 20 Point Plan to deliver critical assistance to innocent civilians.
Hamas is the impediment. They must lay down their arms and stop their looting so that Gaza can have a brighter future.
🙋♂️ Does Psalm 51:18 have any relevance for today?
Psalm 51:18 reads as follows:
📕 "Do good to Zion in your good pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem."
✅ Though some may see this verse as only pertaining to "ancient times", this view ignores God's glorious future for Zion (i.e. Jerusalem) according to the majority of Hebrew prophets.
✅ Believers can confidently pray Psalm 51:18 today, knowing that God has a glorious future for the city. Here are just a few more examples, by no means a full examination:
📕 Isaiah 62:7:
"Do not give Him rest until He establishes and makes Jerusalem the praise of the earth."
📕 Ezekiel 31:28:
"Just as I watched over them to uproot and to tear them down, to demolish and to destroy, and to cause disaster, so will I be attentive to build and to plant them,” says the LORD."
📕 Amos 9:11:
"In that day I will restore the fallen booth of David: I will repair its gaps, restore its ruins, and rebuild it as in the days of old"
📕 Joel 3:17:
"Then you will know that I am Yahweh your God, who dwells in Zion, My holy mountain. Jerusalem will be holy, and foreigners will never overrun it again."
🙋♂️ But the very next verse, 19, predicts sacrifices. And we are done with sacrifices, right?
📕 Psalm 51:19:
"Then You will delight in righteous sacrifices, whole burnt offerings; then bulls will be offered on Your altar."
✅ Yes indeed! When the King returns, He will establish His kingdom in Zion and build a new temple. This is also described by the prophet Ezekiel in chapters 40-48.
🙋♂️ But the Messiah's sacrifice was "once for all" (Hebrew. 10:10) We don't need more. Why would God reinstitute sacrifices?
✅ Yes, it is correct that the Messiah's sacrifice is "one for all." No more sacrifice is needed for the removal of sins. But Ezekiel's temple sacrifices are not for removal of sins. They are either memorial sacrifices that point backward to the ultimate sacrifice of Messiah or they are sacrifices that provide a covering for people living in the kingdom. I give this a fuller treatment in an episode of The TŌV Podcast (link in the comments).
