Fun fact: The gerenuk, whose name derived from the Somali word "Garanuug" meaning “giraffe-necked” is an exceptionally long-necked antelope.

Found in the Horn of Africa, the "Garanuug"with their modified lumbar vertebrae, powerful hind legs, and wedge-shaped hooves make them the only antelope that can stand unsupported in this manner. 

Like many other gazelles, these large antelopes have preorbital glands in front of the eyes that emit a tar-like, scent-bearing substance they deposit on twigs and bushes to mark their territory.

They also have scent glands on their knees that are covered by tufts of hair and between their split hooves.

Gerenuk are able to live without directly drinking water and instead get all required moisture from the plants they consume, due to which they can sustain life in extremely dry habitats such as deserts and scrublands
