@HarveyAlvy1 I think that rather than adopting a rigid zero or rigid minimum grading policy, policies like dropping the lowest grade and offering meaningful extra credit assignments are both pedagogicalky and mathematically better. #edchat

Wonderful thought!Specual education students have so many things working against them! A lot of times they give up because they feel like they can’t read or they say they are dumb. Encouragement goes a long way and a 70 to a special education student is like an Ato others #edchat

1. Treat student w dignity.
2. Preserve your own dignity.
3. Keep them in class.
4. Remain a 2nd to last word person.
5. Teach & practice an alternative.

This is really a mathematical issue about equalizing the impact of zero. I used to comment that 50 is still failing. If you drown in a pool or drown in an ocean, you’re still dead. #edchat

As students grow older I think there is more of an opportunity for teachers to incorporate these factors into content grades #edchat

No one denies the value of instilling responsibility, perseverance, etc. The real question is whether those factors should be calculated into content grades or reported separately. #edchat

I think that both can be detrimental to a students self esteem! The thought of seeing a 0 can be very upsetting to students! Having that zero to average in will probably hurt the student more in the long run 8f the student has average or higher grades!
