In a judgment delivered in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1238/2025, Mohammed Umar, judge of the federal high court, nullified provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) 2023 and the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) Rules 2025 linking Continuing Professional Development (CPD) compliance to legal practice.

Lawyers are valuable for their judgment. AI will take over typing, emailing, formatting, first drafts. Lawyers will increasingly be fettering judgment and giving instructions and corrections.

The real skill will be knowing what actually matters. Not every issue deserves oxygen. Not every risk deserves escalation. The leverage will sit with the person who can separate signal from noise and translate complexity into a clear recommendation.

AI can generate options, but it cannot own outcomes. It does not bear reputational risk, commercial consequences, or client trust. The lawyer of the future is not the best drafter in the room. It is the person with the clearest judgment under uncertainty.

If you’re not the lawyer responsible for the judgment call, and your role is just to do the first pass, draft the docs or spot the general issues, you’re at risk.
