The future of education is increasingly digital, and ensuring that our schools are connected is essential to preparing every learner for that future.

On Tuesday, 18 August 2026, I participated in a strategic meeting with the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN), NSSEC and NITDA, held at the National Universities Commission in Abuja, to explore opportunities for expanding digital connectivity across Nigeria’s basic and secondary schools.

The proposed expansion of NgREN beyond tertiary institutions to public schools presents an important opportunity to strengthen digital learning, improve access to educational resources, enable real-time data exchange and support more effective, evidence-based decision-making.

The proposal to connect 100 schools in each state is particularly significant, with different connectivity solutions. including fibre, satellite and 5G technology, being considered to respond to the varying needs of urban, rural and underserved communities.

UBEC’s ongoing work in digital transformation, including the deployment of Smart Schools, smart interactive boards and connectivity solutions such as Starlink in selected intervention projects, aligns strongly with this broader vision of a digitally connected education system.

I appreciate the leadership of NgREN and the contributions of all participating stakeholders. Strong partnerships will be essential to developing a sustainable connectivity ecosystem that ensures technology reaches the schools and learners who need it most.

Connecting our schools is more than connecting them to the internet; it is connecting our children to knowledge, opportunity and the possibilities of the future.

Strengthening basic education requires more than investment; it requires accountability, innovation and sustained collaboration.

On the occasion of the 30th Quarterly Meeting of UBEC Management and the Executive Chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards, I paid a courtesy visit to the Delta State Government House, where we engaged on the progress and priorities of basic education in the state.

I commended the Delta State Government for its commitment to advancing basic education and for embracing innovative approaches to improving learning outcomes. Of particular interest is the use of technology to strengthen teacher attendance and accountability, reinforcing a fundamental truth: quality infrastructure can only translate into better learning when we have committed teachers present in the classroom.

Our discussions also focused on the effective utilisation of UBEC Matching Grants, the implementation of the State’s education action plan, and the opportunities available to states that demonstrate strong commitment to delivering on their basic education priorities.

As a Commission, we remain committed to providing the necessary technical support and strengthening partnerships with states to ensure that available resources translate into meaningful impact for learners.

The progress recorded in Delta State demonstrates what is possible when government, institutions and stakeholders work with a shared commitment to improving access, quality and learning outcomes.

Our responsibility is to ensure that every investment in basic education ultimately creates a better learning experience and a brighter future for every Nigerian child.
