Well, say the wild lifespan is 20 years. Just to have a number. A mare is pregnant each and every year from 2 to 20. She produces 18 foals therefore. Each 2 adult horses need to produce 2 successors in order to keep the population stable. OK, a tad more but. So there're 16 excess foals there.

So, mostly what horses did before humans is die.
