Israel, the US and the Islamic Republic of Iran must immediately cease or refrain from unlawful attacks on energy infrastructure in light of the risks of devastating civilian harm and environmental impact posed by such attacks.
In recent days Israeli-US air strikes have targeted multiple fuel storage and distribution facilities in Iran, and the Islamic Republic of Iran’s military has carried out attacks affecting fuel depots and oil and gas infrastructure in multiple Gulf states.
The potential for vast, predictable, and devastating civilian harm arising from strikes targeting energy infrastructure, including uncontrolled deadly fires, major disruptions to essential services, environmental damage, and long-term health risks means there is a substantial risk such attacks would violate international humanitarian law and in some cases could amount to war crimes

At its review, #Iraq claims that there are no journalists arrested without a fair judicial process.
Human rights organisations have documented tens of cases of enforced disappearance of journalists and activists involved in the 2019 #Tishreen protests.

Yanar Mohammed, rest in power 🖤
The feminist movement has lost one of its fiercest, most courageous voices. Yanar Mohammed was not only a symbol of resistance, she built the infrastructure of protection for Iraqi women when no one else did. Her killing is an immeasurable loss for all of us who believe in equality, dignity, and the right of women to live free from violence.
Her assassination fits a chilling pattern of targeted killings and attempted killings of human rights defenders that @Amnesty has documented during and in the aftermath of the Tishreen protests since 2019.
We demand justice.
Iraqi authorities must launch a full, independent, and transparent investigation and ensure that those responsible, both perpetrators and those who ordered her killing, are held to account. Impunity for violence against women human rights defenders is unacceptable and fuels further attacks.
Yanar’s legacy will not be erased.
Her courage lives on in every woman she protected, every shelter she built, every life she saved. Her voice will continue to guide our movement, and we will not rest until justice is delivered.

Heart-breaking: Yanar Mohammed, the fearless Iraqi feminist and founder of the Organisation of Women’s Freedom in Iraq (OWFI), was murdered in Iraq yesterday.
Yanar was a dear colleage and friend to so many of us in the women’s rights and feminist community, one of our icons. She spent her life standing up for women’s rights in the most dangerous environment. She spoke out against so-called honor killings, against senseless violence and killings by armed groups, against violence and aggression by States, all States.
She faced constant threats but she never stopped. And today we cry and mourn her energy, her commitment, her profound humanity, her amazing courage.
As we prepare to meet for the Commission on the Status of Women, at a time when so many States are intent on turning the clock on years of (imperfect) progresses on the protection of women’s rights, and non-discrimination; when too many powerful actors are attacking human rights, gender rights and feminism, Yanar will be guiding us.
We will stand tall, we will be relentless in our pursuit of justice and equality, we will be strong and united in resisting the backsliding and increasing violence. We will be courageous.
Rest in Power dear Yanar.
Amid rapid expansion of regional hostilities across the Middle East following the ongoing joint United States-Israel attacks on Iran and the subsequent wave of Iranian retaliatory attacks across the region Amnesty International is issuing an urgent call on all parties to protect civilians, adhere to international humanitarian law, in particular by ending unlawful attacks, such as deliberate, indiscriminate or disproportionate attacks on civilians and civilians infrastructures.

In response to the killing of Yanar Mohammed, @amnesty called on the #Iraqi authorities to "stop this pattern of targeted attacks in their tracks, and take seriously the sustained smear campaigns designed to discredit and endanger activists".

Six years after #Iraq's Tishreen protests, authorities remain busy hounding and intimidating activists and their families, while those behind the horrific killings, assassinations, and enforced disappearances remain at large.

“Sherwan Sherwani is already serving an unjust prison term after being previously convicted on spurious charges. He should have long since been released. Instead, he is being handed a new years-long prison sentence weeks before his scheduled release." Razaw Salihy, Amnesty International’s Iraq Researcher.

The #Kurdistan Regional authorities must uphold their national and international obligations to protect human rights and put an end to this revolving door practice that sees journalsits rearrested and others kept behind bars. #pressfreedom
#Kurdistan Region of #Iraq: new lenghty sentence for journalist #SherwanSherwani weeks before his planned release from #Erbil prison is evidence of perverse practice used to punish critics.
https://t.co/JIRcwBPEUY
#Sherwani, arrested in Oct 2020 with others, was sentenced to 6 years after a grossly unfair trial marked by #torture allegations and tainted confessions. Though his sentence was commuted, new charges in July 2023 extended his imprisonment by 4 more years to block his release.

Ahead of #Iraqi Parliament vote on the draft Law on Freedom of Expression & Peaceful Assembly on 2 Aug, @amnesty calls on lawmakers to oppose or amend provisions that would add to arsenal of tools the authorities are already using to restrict civic space:

Amid extreme temperatures and devastating shortages of water and electricity, activists have been arrested for speaking out against corruption, and journalists have faced judicial harassment for criticizing authorities.
Lawmakers must not add to this litany of repression.

The draft law is being surreptitiously snuck through in a shroud of secrecy at a time when attacks on freedom of expression in #Iraq continue unabated as activists, journalists across the country are harassed, threatened, and arbitrarily arrested and charged under the Penal Code.
Month after month, the world has watched as Israel treated Palestinians in Gaza as a subhuman group unworthy of human rights and dignity, demonstrating its intent to physically destroy them.
