The announcement by the Trump administration that it has set the first military execution in more than six decades is reprehensible and showcases the inherent arbitrariness of the death penalty and the authorities’ utter disregard for the right to life.

A landmark victory for climate accountability: Australia’s High Court has confirmed that the climate impacts of coal and gas projects beyond Australia’s borders cannot simply be ignored in project approvals.
Now, as COP31 President of Negotiations, Australia must confront a fundamental contradiction: Australia cannot be a credible climate leader while continuing fossil fuel production. Communities are already paying the price through floods, fires, extreme heat and drought. The human cost of climate change is impossible to ignore.
The ruling adds to growing global momentum for climate harm accountability, including the International Court of Justice’s Advisory Opinion in 2025 that found that the failure to phase out fossil fuels may constitute an internationally wrongful act.
