Today marks a significant win for the right to bail and equality under Kenyan law.
In Madaraka Law Courts this morning @50PlusMillionKe @LawSocietyofKE @Amnestykenya successfully advocated for reduced bail for 7 individuals arrested during the July 7 #SabaSaba protests. We thank @JudiciaryKE who reduced from Kshs 100,000 to 30,000, a crucial step toward ensuring the suspect’s access to a fair trial.
Under Kenyan law, securing bail and bond is not dependent on one’s guilt or innocence, it is a fundamental right.
Bail terms must be set not only on the severity of the alleged crime but also on the ability of suspects to pay. 5 suspects who couldn’t, have been in detention for 103 days since their arrest. #LegalAwarenessWeek
