Yesterday, 20 May 2026, was the foundation day of my alma mater, the Nigerian Military School, and I was privileged to give a 5-minute mentorship talk. The speech is underneath.
THE CHOICES YOU MAKE TODAY SHAPE YOUR TOMORROW
Good morning, Officers, Instructors, Civilian Staff/Teachers, and Boys of the Nigerian Military School.
It is truly an honour for me to stand here today in the same school where I once sat as a student, just as many of you seated here now did. Being back here brings memories—dreams, laughter, challenges, friendships, and the hope that one day life would turn out well.
At your age, many people think success is something that suddenly happens in the future. But I have learned that success is actually built daily through the small choices we make.
The truth is, your future is already being shaped by your habits, attitude, friendships, and discipline. As they say, there are 2 pains in life: the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. Choose your pain wisely; Choose discipline, not regret.
Many young people are waiting for motivation before they work hard, but motivation comes and goes. Discipline is what truly makes the difference. The students who succeed are not always the smartest; often, they are the most consistent. Like one of the holy books says,” See a man diligent in his ways, he will stand before kings, not mere men”. Be diligent, be consistent; there is a reward for it.
Use your time wisely. Respect your teachers. Read beyond your notes. Learn to do the right thing even when nobody is watching.
Also, be careful about the kind of friends and environment you surround yourself with. There is a concept called the *Broken Windows theory*, which says that when disorder is ignored, it often leads to bigger problems. In life, when people become comfortable with little acts of indiscipline, laziness, dishonesty, or bad behaviour, those things gradually grow and begin to affect their future. Never become comfortable with mediocrity.
Another lesson I want you to remember is this: failure is not the end of life. You may fail a test, face disappointment, or struggle at some point, but do not allow temporary setbacks to define your destiny. Every successful person you admire has faced challenges.
Most importantly, build your character. Your reputation is what people call you, but your character is who you truly are. Intelligence may open doors for you, but character will keep those doors open.
Nigeria and the world need young people who are responsible, disciplined, hardworking, and honest. Whether you become a doctor, engineer, entrepreneur, lawyer, teacher, military officer, or anything else, strive to be a person of value.
As I conclude, let me leave you with this thought:
Years from now, many of you will return to this school as successful men in your own right. Start building that future now. Dream big, work hard, stay disciplined, and never stop believing in yourself._
Thank you, and may God bless you all. Onward Together.
