In Islam, visiting the grave of a non-Muslim or attending their funeral as a gesture of respect is permissible. This is well-established in Islamic law. However, Muslims are advised to refrain from engaging in any religious rituals during the ceremony.

Imam al-Nawawi mentioned that Imam al-Shafi'i, in Mukhtasar al-Muzani, along with other scholars of the Shafi'i school, ruled that it is permissible for a Muslim to follow the funeral procession of a non-Muslim relative. It is also allowed to visit them, according to the majority of scholars. (See al-Majmu', 5/144)

Imam al-Nawawi also said: “There is no problem for a Muslim to follow the funeral of a non-Muslim relative.” (See Minhaj al-Talibin, p. 62)

It is also permissible for Muslims to wash, shroud, and bury the body of a non-Muslim if there is a need to do so. (See al-Mu’tamad fi Fiqh al-Syafie, 1/628; Al-Hawi al-Kabir, 3/19.)

This permission is not only for non-Muslim relatives but also for anyone among non-Muslims. Therefore, attending the funeral of a non-Muslim and participating in religious rituals of other faiths are two separate issues.

Don't be surprised; many Muslims are still unsure about what is appropriate and inappropriate to do in non-Muslim religious events, whether weddings, celebrations, or funerals. That is why continuous education is important.

I have personally attended the funeral of my dear friend and neighbour, Uncle Choong, at Nirvana Memorial Park, Sungai Besi on 2019, to pay my respects.

Uncle Choong was a good friend. We used to eat roti canai together at the mamak restaurant. Even now, I still give a Chinese New Year cake to his family every year, even though he has passed away.
