As a Reagan-voting church-attending Christian, I have a few observations for my conservative brethren who are considering voting for Donald Trump. Even if you like what he did four years ago, he is not the same man today. First, let’s look at what Trump accomplished in his first term:

· He gave us covid vaccines.
· He shut down the economy for covid, leaving us with double-digit unemployment.
· He greatly expanded the national debt, even before his covid shutdown.
· Trump pressured his Fed appointee, Jerome Powell, to cut interest rates, which is a euphemism for printing money. While Trump was still in office in 2020, his appointee inflated the M2 money supply 25%, igniting the inflation hangover we experience today. (If you print money too much money, you get an inflation hangover that takes about two years to hit.)
· He was unable to make a deal with Congress to fix our decaying roads and bridges.
· He signed a peace deal with the Taliban to give away Afghanistan to them, timed to kick in a few months into the next administration.
· His Supreme Court appointees have created a legal system where the government is dictating medical care. Women are dying because they cannot get life-saving medical care and 10-year-old rape victims have trouble getting abortions.
· He summoned a mob to DC for, in his own words, a “wild protest.” He then did nothing for hours as they desecrated the US capitol.

Even if you like Trump’s previous achievements, he is not the same man he was four years ago. He is now 78 years old and clearly showing signs of cognitive impairment. Listen carefully to his rambling speeches and compare them with eight years ago. There is a huge difference. Even if he is OK enough today, where will he be two or three years from now? He won’t get any better.

We need a president who is not senile. He is lost in the delusion that he won the last election. The world situation is too precarious at the moment to trust it to a fading Trump with a faltering grasp on reality. What other false delusions will affect a second Trump term? We need a president with a firm grasp on reality. Will he sit motionless and do nothing when Russia invades Poland, which Russia has threatened to do?

Even if you like Vance and think he will step in when the time comes, we can’t count on a cabinet of loyalists to have the guts to invoke the 25th amendment when Trump’s incapacity inevitably worsens. We know the “never give up” Trump will never gracefully relinquish power. He proved that in January 2021.
