A few people have posted stories of "petty tyranny" from Catholic staff - here is mine: Once a friend asked me to be godfather to his son in another state. The parish there needed a message from my parish saying I was "qualified". The parish secretary refused to give it to me because you have to take a class, and that class only happens every three months. Thing is, I taught the class! I worked for the diocese, and just got the bishop to write the note...
Engineering Wednesday
Stop me if you heard this before ... I was taking a college class and the foreign professor literally could not be understood.
Followed by- I had to drop it, I had to learn by YouTube, I failed it and retook it without issues with someone that could communicate... or when I pointed it out they started to grade me poorly.
Here is what they do not want you to know.
If you are in a class or working with an H-1B holder and you genuinely cannot understand them because of communication barriers, that is not just inconvenient. It is harmful.
Communication is fundamental in engineering, technical fields, and education. A professor or team lead you cannot clearly understand can ruin a student’s understanding of critical material or compromise safety and quality on real projects. One bad semester or one unclear leader can set careers back years.
The H-1B program requires the worker to be qualified for the role. When language proficiency prevents them from effectively doing the job, it is not just a mismatch. It is a failure of the system that displaced or prevented an American who could communicate clearly from taking that position.
You should report legitimate performance and communication issues.
Where to report anonymously:
USCIS Tip Form (for H-1B fraud, misrepresentation, or qualification issues): https://t.co/r1mNp1Gxhl
Department of Labor – Office of Foreign Labor Certification (for PERM and H-1B labor condition violations) https://t.co/YxwGF1PxXY
Call 1-866-4-USWAGE (1-866-487-9243)
Your university or company internal ethics/compliance hotline (if safe) or anonymously
EEOC if it involves discrimination against American workers Call 1-800-669-4000
Engineers and students are often the first to see when someone is in over their head or cannot communicate effectively on critical work. Staying silent allows the problem to continue and harms other Americans in the process.
This is not about nationality. It is about competence and the ability to do the job at the level Americans deserve.
Have you been in a class or project where poor English communication from an H-1B professor or lead seriously hurt learning or performance?
Drop what you observed.
Alpha School is building 4 types of high schools: Service, Division 1 Athletics, Entrepreneurship and "get into a Top 20 university" high schools:
Service high schools will be where you do things like spend a year in Africa building an Alpha School and doing your top 1% academics 3 hours a day, but on site on a different continent.
D1 Athletics high schools will be where you spend 5+ hours a day building yourself into an elite college athlete, maybe with professional aspirations. Again, you'll do your top 1% academics in only 3 hours a day, opening up most of your day to be an incredible athlete.
Entrepreneurship high schools like Founders School run by @nateliason will be where you learn how to earn a million dollars in profits during high school, starting at 12 pm, and only after doing your top 1% academics in only 3 hours a day.
"Get into a top 20 college" high schools will have a focus on giving you 40+ hours a week to build a portfolio of Olympic-level (academic) extracurriculars to go along side top 1% academics in only 3 hours a day.
The common theme here is that when it is possible to get a 1560+ SAT and 10+ APs during high school in only 3 hours a day, teenagers can open up their schedule to spend their years doing the stuff they want to at the highest levels.
This is much different than the best private high schools where classes and homework take up so much time that students only have at most ~20 hours a week to work on their passion projects and leadership activities.
Alpha School gives teenagers 2X+ the time, which makes for much more interesting people at the age of 18. That's why I'm building Toronto into the first 1,000+ student Alpha School city. Reach out if you are interested.
Sorry, but it is in fact highly indeterminate and, in practice if not in principle, the Justices will always have to make recourse to some contested principle of political morality to make interpretive choices. The alternative to originalism is not "words don't mean anything and its all personal policy preferences," is at minimum, adjudication that openly states WHAT principles of political morality the decision rests upon and WHY those principles are properly internal to the law given the nature of law, and our own legal traditions, practices, customs, and precedents.
You know why I was almost date raped but the guy didn't go through with it? I was so drugged, I didn't realize I was about to be raped, but I knew this guy taking off my pants wanted to have sex. And I couldn't even process my own well being, I was offended for him, thinking, "don't you know sex before marriage is wrong?" So I said "don't you worry about your soul?" And that made him stop. He stopped trying to take off my pants. He left me alone and let me leave. Somehow my concern for this man's soul while I was drugged with a near incapacitating dose of probably benzos saved me from being raped. How strange.
It’s cute how Claude has the beaver-building-dam attitude about how adjusting your gradients to minimize prediction error is actually the greatest and most important thing in the universe
I missed Fight Club when it was in the theater.
But I remember the first time I saw it. It was at my buddy Rusty's house with a bunch of other dudes.
Google tells me the Fight Club DVD was released in June of 2000, so it would have been shortly after that...
We were drinking beer, enjoying ourselves. After the movie, and inspired by the power of cinema, we had a bare knuckle boxing match.
But the memory that sticks with me is the iconic ending (with the narrator holding Marla Singer's hand) while the Pixies's Where is My Mind plays.
I remember thinking, "Why would they use that song?"
Now the song is a timeless classic, but at the time all I could think was how old and dated it was.
The Pixies' Surfer Rosa album was released in 1988, and by the time Fight Club was released an entire lifetime of culture and history had come and gone. In that time the Berlin Wall fell, the Soviet Union collapsed, while globalization and the internet took off.
The year 2000 was a completely different world from the era of Surfer Rosa and Where is My Mind. Fashion, music, culture, had changed remarkably. So why would did Fincher use that old-ass song? By then it was ancient history.
Maybe it's a betrayal of my middle-age memory, but I grew up in a world where things changed--where history and culture had a velocity.
And then that velocity hit a wall. It happened about a year after the drunken bare knuckle boxing match in Rusty's living room.
Those who are old enough to remember the event will never forget the date.
It was the day when the cresting wave of the American Empire broke on the shore.
Things didn't stop all at once, but the pace slowed. It slowed to the point that culture in Our Current Year isn't all that different than the early 2000s.
And yes, we have social media and smart phones and you see the occasional self driving car and the kids don't get drunk and fuck anymore.
But it's not that different.
A time traveler from 2003 wouldn't feel out of place in today's world--it's not like jumping from say, 1965 to 1990.
I've been puzzling over our Stuck Culture for quite some time. How could things just stop? What force could do something like this?
For a time I thought it was a function of smart phones and social media, but I've had a change of heart.
Social media is merely the effect, not the cause. It's merely the mirror we gaze into looking for answers and distraction and comfort--to soothe our loss of community and culture and drown out the feelings of loneliness and isolation and alienation.
So what happened? Why did we get stuck?
In a recent Tucker Carlson interview, my friend Frank Wright connected it for me. He said (and I'm paraphrasing here) that the regime the Forever Wars changed wasn't in the Middle East--it was here at home.
Whatever it was that ruled us in the 2000s--and the thing that still rules us now--wasn't what ruled us in the 1990s.
September 11th and the Forever Wars that followed were a victory for The Machine. And The Machine doesn't care about us--let alone silly things like art, music, fashion, and culture.
But I feel motion. It's lurching forward in starts and fits. History is moving again. And like sleeping passengers on a stopped train, we're being shaken from our slumber.
The Machine got lazy and it got sloppy. Too many of us see the world for what it is now, and we're not going back to sleep.
I see it in Los Angeles, I see it in Belfast, I see it everywhere.
Not that I have any idea what the future holds, but I know something new is coming.
I've got kids now. And I hope this new world has something to offer them. They'll be out of the house in a few years, and they'll have their own drunken bare knuckle boxing matches to attend. At least I hope they will.
But for now, all I have to say is...
With your feet in the air and your head on the ground, try this trick and spin it, yeah.
Absolutely.
Growing up in rural Upstate New York, I didn't see a living, real-life black person until I was 16 years old.
All non-white races were things you saw on TV only. Almost presumed to be mythical.
I even have a cousin who said: "wait, there are still Jews?" because she seriously thought that they were from the Bible times and no longer exist.
This kind of thing is almost unbelievable to anyone from really anywhere other than the deep rural Northeastern US. Perhaps parts of the Ozarks and Appalachia too if I were to guess.
Then, after a life in a place like this, people from these areas might read online that the taxes are better in South Carolina, so they move there -- and they are in for RADICAL culture shock. Same with the kids who went off to college in major cities. Mind-blowing, shocking, frightening racial awakenings take place when you leave places like these.
Hell, living here I still kinda forget that most of the US just isn't white anymore. I cannot think of the last time I interacted with or saw anyone here who isn't white.
This is so devastating. Imagine being a black parent tonight. How do you protect your children? If they go out and stab just one person, they might go to prison. It’s like a black man in America can’t even murder anyone anymore. Unimaginable. Jim Crow all over again. I’m furious.
St. Lawrence of Brindisi was assigned for 2 years to preach to the Jews of Rome, and his Hebrew was so good they thought he must be a converted Jew himself. He won their admiration because he had attentively studied Jewish texts such as the Talmud, and in this way he won many converts.
2 episodes on this little-known but incredibly impressive Doctor coming soon!
I've come to realize that widespread voting by mail enables communists who hate me to effectively vote on behalf of the illiterate, the infirm, the easily led, and the non-English speaking
There is no plausible way to prevent this, therefore voting by mail must be abolished
@PaulinusOfTrier@AuthGirlPower lol, ok. It literally refers to the same thing. Idk why you got confused about this in the NO, but you shouldn’t mistake your confusion about something with what it actually is.
@PaulinusOfTrier@AuthGirlPower What do you mean where? In both forms it’s placed in exactly the same place, lol. In both forms the phrase “mysterium fidei” refers to the Transubstantiation. I’m baffled by how you think it refers to Transubstantiation in the TLM but then in the exact same position in the NO
