EASL is deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Professor Michael P. Manns (1951–2025).
A visionary leader in hepatology, Professor Manns shaped the field through his pioneering research in viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver diseases, transplantation and regenerative medicine. He served as Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology at Hannover Medical School for nearly three decades, and held leading roles in Hep-Net, the German Liver Foundation, UEG, and EASL.
His scientific excellence, dedication and mentorship inspired colleagues around the world. Professor Manns received numerous awards, including the EASL Recognition Award (2007) and the UEG Lifetime Achievement Award (2022).
EASL extends heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of hepatologists.
