"Schlock" can be defined as "cheap or inferior; trash". "Schlock rock" is considered "schlocky" because "cultural theft" i.e. profiting off of others' work without giving due credit, especially if profits are higher due to race, is a pretty "trash" thing to be doing. #W23POPMUS
@therealaguindon I absolutely agree! "Schlock rock" gives an opportunity for reflection and learning. It makes us think about the politics behind covering other people's music and how to properly credit them moving forward. #W23POPMUS
@BenHeffernan9#W23POPMUS I agree! It is tough to say that anything "holds no value". For example, while "schlock rock" is cultural theft, it may lead people to find and appreciate the original songs - especially nowadays when song origins are a mere Google away.
I think Ray Charles used his "breaking" vocal sound to create a unique and recognizable timbre in his music. The raspy cracks in his voice create a depth to the sound and aid in the expression of emotion and sex appeal. #W23POPMUS
@therealaguindon #W23POPMUS I absolutely agree! Artists backgrounds/training always shows up in their work in one way or another. Ray Charles' unique sound is a great example of this!
I think the feature that some streaming services have where you can see what your friends are listening to can be very influential because even your "private" listening becomes "public". It adds another layer of self-consciousness when choosing what to listen to. #W23POPMUS
@marilyn_brandy Absolutely! There are so many wonderful artists that I now LOVE through Spotify's suggestions. The algorithms work wonders. It's like flipping through a CD store, but tapered to your exact tastes. I'm with you re: airpods too...#W23POPMUS
@slsinyard I agree! I think that we become so used to seeing these inflated portrayals of reality that it almost becomes our reality. This can make it hard to differentiate between "true" and "false" needs. #W23POPMUS
A huge "false need" created by popular music/media is a strong need to fit into the "trendy" image of sexual attractiveness. I feel this is particularly strong of a "need" amongst women, with endless examples of songs perpetuating this "need" #W23POPMUS
