2/2 discovering artists from other countries, as they are already often left out of mainstream popular music on our radios. Most music we encounter (without actively searching for it) is American. #W23POPMUS
#W23POPMUS While I do not necessarily agree with the need for a Canadian music quota, I do think it is a smart method to give artists a leg up in attempting to break into an industry where Americans dominate. I disagree with the notion that it takes away from 1/1
@chboland1 I agree with you, but while there's not a desperate need to boast Canadian culture, it's a nice little advantage for Canadian artists who have had trouble breaking into the industry, as Canadian artists are much more often overlooked and have to work harder to be known #W23POPMUS
@Quantuminsanit1 While I don't believe the quota is necessary, as you said, many Canadian artists have made themselves known, I do think it is an interesting way to give Canadians a slight advantage in breaking into the heavily American-dominated industry. #W23POPMUS
@kdeeringmun Yes, I agree entirely! Covers, which are respectful toward the original artist, artistic themselves in nature, and therefore have value, are not to be confused with stolen works. #W23POPMUS
@MarLee2834@BaileyRubyFord Absolutely! It's shameful how much music and culture was stolen from POC and appropriated by white Americans, not just "schlock". It is important that we recognize these instances in musical history where credit was not given to whom it was due. #W23POPMUS
@hanna_przybyla I entirely agree with this, Hanna! The connection between an artist and audience found in live performance is Irreplaceable, despite technology making a sometimes more "perfect" sound than can be produced by a live artist. #W23POPMUS
@lilyjacobs21 That being said, with the question posing a preference between a favourite record and a cover band playing the same songs, I agree that many people would prefer to hear their favourite artist on a track over a live performance by cover artists. #W23POPMUS
@lilyjacobs21 Hi Lily! I totally agree with technological advances making music more accessible, however I have to disagree about people no longer caring for live performances! I think to see a favourite artist live is an incomparable experience that is still highly valued. #W23POPMUS
@AlexanderButl3r I agree as well. To be successful in producing popular music, it bodes well to stick to similar beats and messages that are also doing well. That being said, there is quite a lot of very unique music that would still be classified as popular.
@mckenziecaul@OliviaHarrhy I agree! Many people do not actually consider the lyrics or musical elements of a song, they simply "enjoy" it passively. The audience is not attentive to messages being delivered, or if they do pay any thought to these messages, they are common & therefore not questioned further
#W23POPMUS I somewhat agree with notions suggested by Adorno & Horkheimer. I believe messages are predetermined and distributed by the industry, and that the large influence this has on culture is due to an inflated portrayal of reality, and the inability to distinguish realities
