@BaileyRubyFord Music has a different sound when its recorded vs live. New technologies alter how an artist sounds, so when they perform live it does not sound like what people listen to. Recordings are also much more accessible now that people have more access to streaming services. #W23POPMUS
@KyleMusseau Money is a factor for why people have switched to recordings. Concerts now are expensive and for those in NL, are not accessible. Recorded live versions can be a good substitute, but new technologies have made it harder to enjoy it as much as a high quality recording.

I agree with Wald's statement. While the experience of seeing a band live is still desired, recorded music is more favoured to listen to casually. New technologies in recordings have impacted this as it changes the sound compared to what is played live (ex: autotune). #W23POPMUS
@Victoria21Haley Good post! I agree that this music was considered schlock due to the lack of authenticity. I feel like these covers would hold more value for those who do not care about the authenticity. For instance, teens may care more about the sound of the music than the culture. #W23POPMUS
@reeganmp I agree with your points! I think the majority of people definitely would value the original more, especially if the remakes are being considered "schlock." I also think that since it appeals to a younger audience, older audiences may not value it as much. Great post! #W23POPMUS
I think this music is considered "schlock" as it is a remake of popular songs from another culture. Appealing to teens may have made it appear less attractive to mature audiences. However, there are reasons that this music should be valued as it is still an art form. #W23POPMUS
@BaileyRubyFord Great post! His vocal breaks definitely highlight his talent. He could sound good while adding a different element to his vocals. It also showed his talents as a storyteller as he was able to add these voice breaks at specific sections that emphasized his emotion. #W23POPMUS
@Luke_Billard Great post! I agree that the breaking voice can sometimes be more effective than the lyrics themselves. The lyrics of "I've Got a Woman" are not overly passionate, but Ray Charles adds to it by breaking his voice in specific moments that help convey his passion. #W23POPMUS
Ray Charles's "breaking voice" conveys his passion for the women he is referring to. It is a more powerful way to show how he feels than just using lyrics. It also highlighted his vocal and storytelling talent and made the song more unique and exciting to listen to. #W23POPMUS
@adentremont31 I agree! I listen to so much more music now that I have a streaming service than when I had to purchase every song. Along with simply having a streaming service, the service you have impacts how you are viewed. For instance, the Spotify vs Apple Music debate. #W23POPMUS
@rachaelkwall_ Great point! I have found that I listen to different genres and eras of music than I did before subscribing to a streaming service. I have found songs from other cultures that teach us about their way of life that I never would have heard without my streaming sites! #W23POPMUS
Listening technologies have influenced ideas on identity. For example, people without AirPods may be viewed as lesser. These technologies have changed how people listen to and access music. I only use streaming sites, so I listen to less of what is currently popular. #W23POPMUS
@jenna_hanrahan I agree with your points! Many songs romanticize dating people who do not treat you properly. While these types of songs do not seem to be "dumbed-down," I think the songs that create a false need for other things, like partying, can be as they can be surface-level.

@OliviaHarrhy I agree that people typically do not think further about the messages of materialism in popular music. It is common to hear a song on the radio about owning a fancy house or car and not think anything about it. When in reality, that is not attainable for most people. #W23POPMUS
#W23POPMUS Popular music has created many "false needs," like living a lavish lifestyle. For example, owning expensive cars is often mentioned in songs. This propagates a "dumbed-down" music form as it involves these false needs and does not require deep thought to relate to it.
