Poland's Blueberry Paradox: Europe's Largest Producer Is Quietly Becoming a Net Importer

Two berries, one word, and a market at a turning point. A full breakdown of Poland's cultivated and wild blueberry economy as the 2026 season peaks.

Two Berries, One Word

Before you can understand the money in Poland's blueberry trade, you have to understand that there are two completely different fruits hiding behind one name. The first is the cultivated highbush blueberry, the big, pale, farmed berry that Poles call borówka amerykańska, the American blueberry. It grows on tall bushes in orderly plantations and it is the one that fills supermarket punnets across Europe. The second is the wild forest bilberry, jagoda leśna, the small, dark, intensely flavoured berry that grows low to the ground in Polish forests and stains your fingers for days.

The naming is a small national comedy in itself. In most of Poland the wild forest berry is jagoda and the farmed one is borówka. Around Kraków the words flip, and the forest berry is called borówka too. This is why the annual summer treat, the jagodzianka, the sweet yeast bun packed with dark forest berries that appears in every Polish bakery in July and August, is never called a borówczanka. When we talk about the "Polish blueberry market," we are really talking about two markets that behave in opposite ways. One is industrialising and globalising. The other is a cash economy run out of the boots of cars parked at the edge of a forest.

The Cultivated Giant

On the farmed side, Poland is the biggest cultivated blueberry producer in the European Union. The growth over the last decade has been remarkable. Planted area roughly doubled from about 5,800 hectares in 2018 to nearly 13,000 hectares by 2024, and annual production now sits somewhere between 60,000 and 68,000 tonnes, enough to place Poland among the top five producing countries in the world. Spain, the next largest in Europe, harvested around 66,600 tonnes in the 2024/25 season, which tells you how close the top of the European table has become.

The weakness underneath the headline is yield. Polish plantations average roughly 5.7 tonnes per hectare, well below the global average of about 8.9 and a fraction of Peru's 14. A large part of the reason is structural. The Polish sector is built on small farms, averaging only about 1.4 hectares each, which makes mechanisation, cold-chain logistics and export scale harder than in Peru or Chile. The better operators have responded by chasing certification, GLOBALG.A.P. and IFS food-safety standards that are effectively the entry ticket to major European retailers, and by moving toward premium ready-to-eat packaging and newer varieties. The Polish season runs about fourteen weeks, from late June to mid-September, and it opens right after Spain leaves the market, which is exactly the window when European demand for fresh berries peaks.

The Great Inversion

Here is the interesting part, and the part most people miss. Poland is Europe's blueberry giant, and it is slowly turning into a net importer of the fruit. Traditionally about 30 percent of Polish production was exported, mostly to Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Scandinavia, with the rest eaten or processed at home. In 2024 fresh exports actually rose 17 percent to nearly 26,000 tonnes. So far, so healthy.

But domestic appetite has grown faster. The blueberry is now the second most popular berry in Poland, and Poles increasingly want it all year round, not just for the fourteen weeks the local season provides. To meet that off-season demand, Poland now imports blueberries from Spain, Peru, South Africa and Morocco during the winter months. The result is that in 2022/23 the Polish blueberry trade balance turned slightly negative, with imports exceeding exports by about €6.4 million. A country that grows more blueberries than anyone else in the EU paid, on net, to bring them in. Forecasters expect production to plateau around 70,000 tonnes by 2030, which means the domestic-demand story, not the export story, is now the one that decides where this market goes.

Black Gold in the Forests

While the plantations industrialise, the wild forest berry runs on an entirely different logic. Every summer, from late June through August and into September in the mountains, thousands of pickers head into the forests of eastern and southern Poland, the Bieszczady especially, to gather jagoda leśna by hand. It is sold on wholesale markets, at roadside stalls and increasingly through online listings, almost always for cash. There is no supply chain, no algorithm, no cold room. Just a picker, a bucket and a scale.

The 2026 season has seen record prices, softened only slightly by good summer rains that kept the forests productive. On wholesale markets a kilogram of wild bilberries has been trading at roughly 38 to 50 złoty, with Bronisze near Warsaw at 40 to 50, the Kalisz exchange at 45, Kraków's Rybitwy market at 38 to 40, and Wrocław's Targpiast at the cheaper end around 30 to 37. At Warsaw's Hala Mirowska, where supply was thin, sellers were asking 55, and one covered market hall in Wrocław reached 59. Retail listings by the litre have run from about 23 to 35 złoty. For a fruit nobody plants, that is a serious informal economy, and it is worth remembering that picking is banned in national parks and carries real fines.

The Ukrainian Shadow

The most consequential business story is happening at the border. For years Poland played the role of a re-export hub, taking in Ukrainian berries and sending them on into the rest of the EU while Polish operators captured the margin. Ukraine has since become a serious producer in its own right, setting export records for fresh blueberries and frozen berries, and Poland remains the single biggest buyer of Ukrainian frozen raspberries, importing tens of thousands of tonnes a season. The trade tensions and import bans that began in 2023 reshaped these flows, but they did not stop them.

The flashpoint is mislabelling. Polish growers' associations, led by the Związek Sadowników RP, have complained loudly that cheaper imported frozen berries are being passed off as Polish, and that processors with cold rooms full of Ukrainian fruit no longer want to buy the current Polish harvest. Regulators have started to act. Poland's commercial quality inspectorate, IJHARS, blocked a 20-tonne consignment of Ukrainian frozen forest berries in Lublin. This matters because Poland is genuinely strong in frozen berries, exporting on the order of 197,000 tonnes of frozen berry fruit in a recent year and leading in categories like blackcurrant and blueberry. The fight is not really about the fresh punnet on the shelf. It is about who controls the far larger frozen and processing trade behind it.

The Polish blueberry market is a clean model of the wider pressure on Central European agriculture. A proud export sector is being squeezed from below by cheaper Ukrainian volume, and pulled inward by its own rising domestic demand, at the same time. The strategic response is already visible, and it is the right one: move up the value curve into premium varieties, ready-to-eat packaging and certified fresh exports; mechanise to escape a shrinking and more expensive labour pool; and defend the frozen and processing trade with enforcement against mislabelled imports. The country that grows the most berries will not necessarily be the country that captures the most value from them.

Amazon just got caught running a secret price manipulation operation with Levi's, Home Depot, Walmart, and many more.

Every time you "comparison shopped" online, you were looking at prices that were already rigged.

Here's what happened:

Amazon would monitor prices on Walmart, Target, Best Buy, Home Depot, and Chewy in real time. The second a competitor listed a product cheaper than Amazon, they'd contact the brand directly and tell them to "fix it."

And the exact emails are now PUBLIC.

Amazon sent Levi's links to two Walmart listings with the subject line "styles of concern." They basically said the prices on Walmart are too low and we have a problem.

The next day, Levi's responded: "I talked to Walmart and they have partnered with us to take Easy Khaki Classic fit back up to ladder SPP price, $29.99 immediately."

Levi's literally called Walmart and told them to raise the price. Because Amazon told Levi's to make the call.

Walmart complied. Then Amazon matched the HIGHER price.

Both retailers ended up charging more. The customer paid extra. Nobody competed.

Same playbook with Hanes:

Amazon sent them links showing Target and Walmart prices were lower. Hanes confirmed they "reached out to Target and Walmart to have the prices increased."

Target increased the prices. Walmart increased the prices. Amazon kept their margins.

But it gets even worse...

Amazon told Allergan (the company that makes eye drops) that their product was "suppressed" on Amazon because it was cheaper on another site.

Allergan responded: "Walmart got their price back up to $16.99." Amazon then unsuppressed the listing.

They did this with pet treats on Chewy. Furniture on Home Depot. Products across dozens of categories spanning YEARS.

The mechanism is simple but terrifying:

If you're a brand and you sell cheaper on Walmart than on Amazon, Amazon suppresses your product, removes you from the Buy Box, buries you in search results, and effectively makes you invisible to 300 million customers.

Brands can't afford that. So they call Walmart and Target and say "raise your prices or we'll lose our Amazon listings."

Walmart and Target comply because they need the brand's products.

Amazon captures 40 cents of every dollar spent online in America. That gives them the leverage to set prices across THE ENTIRE internet. Not just their own platform.

So turns out, you were never comparison shopping.

You were looking at a coordinated price floor set by Amazon through backroom phone calls between brands and their competitors.

"Amazon is working to make your life more unaffordable."

3 separate antitrust trials are now scheduled for 2027. The FTC has its own case. 18 states plus the DOJ are piling on.

This is literally happening during the WORST affordability crisis in a generation. Groceries up 25% since 2020. Housing unaffordable. Wages flat.

And the largest ecommerce company on Earth has been secretly coordinating with brands to make sure you can't find a cheaper price ANYWHERE.

"Competition" in retail is just a fantasy.
