🌍🌍If you haven't been to East Africa in the past 3 years you might not pay attention to this post.

Today, i want to delve into the severe drought crisis in Eastern Africa, which has dire implications for millions but very few people actually pay attention.

1/ 🌧️🌧️Large areas of Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya are currently grappling with one of the worst droughts in recent history. An alarming 16.7 million people face acute food insecurity, surpassing the combined populations of Austria and Switzerland.

2/ 🌦🌦️Since late 2020, Eastern Africa has experienced four consecutive failed rainy seasons, an event not witnessed in at least 40 years. This meteorological drought has depleted soil moisture, dried up waterways, and resulted in the loss of millions of livestock.

3/ 🌧️🌧️The Horn of Africa relies heavily on two rainy seasons per year, with the long rains from March to May being particularly crucial, contributing 70% of the annual total. This year, the delayed and failed long rains have exacerbated the crisis.

4/ ☔☔ Unfortunately, the short-term outlook is grim, as forecasts suggest that the upcoming September to December rainy season may also fail. If this happens, we could face an unprecedented five-season drought.

5/ 🌽🌽The ongoing humanitarian crisis triggered by the drought raises serious concerns about future food and water security in the Horn of Africa. Climate change, as per the latest IPCC report, is projected to further strain the region's food systems.
