It's really striking how Islamism has become a major feature of progressive politics. It's also a huge indicator that Jewish progressivism and overtures towards "intergroup solidarity" failed horrendously.
@MaryFalconer6@wesyang That’s too bad, I’ve found that the Czech and the Dutch are pretty much the two least antisemitic non Americans in the Western world I’ve come across, so makes me sad to hear you had a bad experience in that way
@ThatTimeYouSaw@gnomeo5000brat@wesyang … earlier were Christian but whose parents weren’t and who didn’t grow up with any religion to speak of, out in the northwest
@ThatTimeYouSaw@gnomeo5000brat@wesyang At the same time, I remember reading Constantine’s sword and thinking how oddly Hyperfocusing on the Holocaust really detracted from a fuller understanding of the level of persecution against Jews in Christendom throughout history. I say this as a man whose grandparents and…
@RevDove@Timthoughtsdot@Rainmaker1973 Wait, if the head of the harem was the sultan’s mother, does that mean she was part of the harem? In other words, did the mother and the sultan copulate?
The chances that a person who claims moral superiority to you will tweet the most awful psychotic shit you've ever seen can be comfortably rounded up to 100%.
Opposition to lab grown meat is just mindless hysteria. If we can recreate the taste and texture of meat without any of the associated negatives, people should be happy. If we no longer have to raise and slaughter billions of animals a year that would be great for our planet.
@jeffnolan@ratlpolicy The other thing that was different was the Germany actually wanted to surrender well before it did, it was just the strength of the Hitler cult powered by the inner Hitler clique plus fear of the Soviets that kept them going
Today, I am proud to announce that I will be proposing “Zohran’s law," a law that will keep the rich out of New York’s affordable housing.
@ZohranKMamdani : you say freeze the rent. But for who? Rich people like you? Hardworking, working class New Yorkers are being pushed from their neighborhoods.
Let’s build affordable housing that helps the people who need it. Under Zohran’s law, landlords can no longer rent vacant rent-controlled units to the wealthy.
You are a rich person stealing affordable housing from the poor. And you’re not the only one. It’s past time we address this injustice. Let’s build a new NYC that works for the people who need it.
Carriers are extremely big and armored with anti sinking redundancies and modern ones are runway armored too. Basically it takes big explosions to seriously harm them - even in ww2 no carrier we built during the war (with a number of survivability improvements) was sunk, just pre war US carriers. Modern ones are far more resilient.
There has been no game changing breakthrough in chemical explosives in the intervening time. Big boom means big heavy bomb.
So with all that said:
- drone swarms are basically a non factor. Cheap kamikaze drones physically arent big enough to carry explosives that will do much of anything to a carrier. They're a risk to planes on deck but that's managed by taking off deck when a swarm is detected which covering long distance in open ocean they will be
- a lot of current missile variants are similarly too low yield. Bigger ones exist but there are intractable weight / speed / ability to adjust in terminal descent tradeoffs that you can move around in the tradeoff space but cant remove
- hitting a carrier is hard. It moves at car speed which if you're shooting at it from five minutes away is... a fairly sizable evasive radius. Modern missiles can do some course correction but with high weight, high speed and that evasive radius you are asking a lot.
- missile defense is quite good and it doesn't have to shoot down everything, shooting down yemeni junk missiles is a casualties zero luxury not ship saving. You have to shoot down the big nasty ones you didn't evade. Can tank a lot of the rest in a pinch.
- EM warfare isnt a huge factor, it can screw up the 5 lb electronics on drones but those aren't serious redundant systems. They are however a great defense against weight constrained missile hardware that has to receive fine tuned course correction over comms. Basically EM favors big platforms.
Long story short carriers are fine. They're not invulnerable but they're huge and tough and the universe of things that can actually hurt them isn't huge. The soviets thought there was a good chance they'd have to nuke them to kill them and made all their anti ship missiles nuclear capable. They arent dying to drones and cruise missiles. There's a reason china is building them too.
