FFmpeg is moving to Rust 🦀
Our use of C and Assembly in FFmpeg has been an unacceptable violation of safety.
FFmpeg will be running 10x slower - but we're doing it for your safety.
All your videos will appear green - safety first, working software later.
Be Linus Torvalds
> writes an OS as a hobby accidentally changes computing forever
> picks C because abstractions lie
works close to hardware, trusts nothing blindly
> builds Linux, lets the world fight over it
> creates Git out of spite for bad tools
> says exactly what he thinks, no PR filter
> ignores trends, frameworks, hype cycles
> lives quietly, codes when it matters
> doesn’t sell courses, doesn’t sell motivation
> still relevant decades later because fundamentals don’t age
Did Linus solve tech by not playing the tech game at all?
I expressed my sentiments in this thread about using C for my daily job and received a fair amount of criticism. I still do to this day. Fast forward a year and a half later, I released a file manager for Windows, with a ~2MB single executable that outperforms most of the existing managers for Windows, while still looking modern and sleek.
People get caught up in modern languages and frameworks instead of focusing their entire effort on building the best product possible. And trust me, you can pack A LOT into a few megabytes of code if you truly care.
Users DON'T care if you use Rust or whatever the latest UI framework abomination JS released. They only care about using your product.

My brand new #Infocom style Horror #adventure "The Ghosts of Blackwood Manor" is due to be released soon for all major home computers of the #80s. Here are some in-game screens from #Amstrad#CPC and #Commodore64. You're going to love this! Who's ready? #IF#interactive#fiction
This needs to be done right otherwise opens the door for lots of security issues such as leaked secrets and server logic.
I’m worried seeing some of the current approaches and if we go this direction it’ll likely be in a different way.
If we prioritize this work you’ll see it on our roadmap :)
In these last few days, I've done a lot of work on #NesterinTrail and/or on my @C64#graphic#textadventure engine and it's been amusing - but it's time to put this on hold for a while (till mid-June), and start to think about a #pointandclick idea for the incoming #advjam2023
