The ultimate geopolitical choke point: Russia's Yamal gas intersection. Sitting 1,700 km from Ukraine, this vital hub is well within range of Kyiv's newly proven 2,000 km long-range strike drones.
If Ukrainian drone commander Robert "Madyar" Brovdi turns his attention northward, the result wouldn't just be a gas freeze—it would trigger a total collapse of the Russian power grid. Russia relies heavily on gas-fired generators to balance the massive output from its nuclear power plants. Knocking out the Yamal hub would cause a catastrophic black-start failure across the country.
With no power, no heating, and no industrial capacity, the Kremlin would face an existential domestic crisis. Is this the threat that finally forces Moscow to abandon its "SVO" and pull back? The clock is ticking on Russia's energy heartland. #YamalHub #EnergySecurity #DroneWarfare #Madyar #UkraineWar #RussiaEnergy #Geopolitics
Applebaum: Military loss has often changed Russia. Russians tell themselves they never lose wars and won World War II.
Russia has lost many wars, and each loss hit hard. The shock comes when propaganda meets reality.

If Ukraine gets a license to start the process of building Patriot missiles, but gets no extra deliveries from the USA until they can build their own, it’s a big win for Putin. It means many years with no new Patriots for Ukraine.
It is amazing and depressing how often Trump has ridden to Putin's aid since becoming President. Just some of his actions include:
1) Cutting off all US military and economic aid for Ukraine
2) Slow walking vital military sales to Ukraine
3) Rehabilitating Putin by inviting him to the USA
4) Trying to bully Ukraine into handing over more of its territory and people to Ukraine
5) Relaxing sanctions on Belarus
6) Starving Ukraine of Patriot missiles leaving Ukraine vulnerable
7) Driving up the price of oil for months when Russia desperately needed money
Its a Russian wish list which the USA has fulfilled. The US is an enemy of freedom and democracy in Europe.
Americans getting upset because I keep saying that the USA is helping Putin kill Ukrainians and not Trump, need to face facts. The American people elected Trump and this Congress, and this Cabinet was confirmed by the Senate. This is the policy of the US government.
My heart is with the people of Ukraine. For the past few years, we've dedicated this moment during The Rhythm of My Heart to the strength, courage and resilience of the Ukrainian people. Every night, the crowd joins together in support. In light of the recent horrific attacks on Kyiv, I hope this small tribute reminds you that people all over the world continue to stand with you.
The Kremlin admits to the catastrophic damage Ukrainian drone strikes has had on Russia economy. Oil and gas revenue losses of one trillion rubles due to attacks on refineries
For the third month in a row, the Russian government is paying record subsidies to oil companies from the budget, as their refineries, which have been targeted by UAVs of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, are being destroyed one after another.
In June, the federal treasury transferred 312.5 billion rubles to oil companies - 210.6 billion as part of the damping mechanism and 101.9 billion through the reverse excise tax, according to data published on Friday by the Ministry of Finance.
A month earlier, the volume of subsidies amounted to 357.3 billion rubles, and in April - 359.3 billion. Over the three months, oil companies received 1.029 trillion rubles - an amount equal to two annual budgets of large regions such as the Sverdlovsk region or the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
Payments under the damping mechanism - a mechanism introduced in 2018 to stabilize domestic gasoline prices - have reached a record high since December 2023. And the reason for this is difficulties in oil refining, analysts of Raiffeisenbank wrote.
As a result, the budget is losing oil and gas revenue from soaring oil prices. In June, it collected 968 billion rubles in mineral extraction tax, but every third ruble was returned to oil companies in the form of subsidies. For the first half of the year, the inflow of raw material rent into the budget fell by 23%, to 3.66 trillion rubles - a minimum since 2020.
Following the federal budget, the budgets of the oil companies themselves will suffer. Damage to the infrastructure of refineries, which is now leading to losses in oil refining, will subsequently result in repair costs of at least several hundred billion rubles, economist Kirill Rodionov points out.
The repair of the Moscow Refinery alone, which was hit twice and stopped work until 2027, will cost about $1 billion, analysts of the investment bank "Sinara" estimate.
What the Republicans/Conservatives don't seem to understand or admit, is that with their tolerance of massive Presidential corruption and their huge expansion of Presidential power, they are setting the stage for the most powerful and extreme, left-wing President in US history.
Liebe Leute,
Germany no longer trusts that the US will share intelligence. So Berlin is unshackling its spy agency to stand on its own, after Trump briefly cut Ukraine off.

Snyder: Trump thinks everybody is going to roll over when he says stuff. That's true of a lot of people in his party. It's not true of people in the rest of the world.
Nobody in the world thinks Trump is strong. Nobody. I leave the US— nobody thinks he's strong. 1/

Yesterday’s abrupt retirement announcement by Gen. Chris Donahue, the Commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa (USAREUR-AF) and NATO’s Allied Land Command, was made at the request of the Pentagon under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, people familiar with the matter tell The Wall Street Journal.
Prior to this announcement, many believed Donahue was on a fast track to become Vice Chief of Staff of the Army, having led the Army’s Delta Force commandos in Iraq and Syria when it took the fight to Islamic State militants and was the “last man out” when the troops he commanded at the 82nd Airborne Division were called in to secure the 2021 evacuation of U.S. personnel and Afghan allies from Kabul, Afghanistan.
General Donahue’s removal is said to be part of an ongoing push by Hegseth to put his imprint on the military’s leadership, while squeezing out officers with track records of battlefield valor and command experience in favor of less accomplished political loyalists, officers that fully support both himself and President Trump.
