As the Red Cross response gathers pace following two powerful earthquakes in north-central Venezuela, CHF 2 million from the IFRC Disaster Response Emergency Fund @IFRC_DREF has been approved to support urgent action on the ground.

The @IFRC is preparing to launch an Emergency Appeal very soon to support people affected by the earthquakes.

The Venezuelan Red Cross @CruzRojaVe is operational and responding, supporting evacuations and search efforts, carrying out rapid assessments, delivering care through its hospitals and polyclinics, and mobilising relief supplies for affected communities. https://t.co/2xkiiJOFxx

“Strategic Roundtable on Corporate Power for Early Action & Real Impact” organized in cooperation with the Turkish Red Crescent and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), was held in Istanbul.

At the meeting, attended by our President Fatma Meriç Yılmaz and IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain, the Disaster Response Emergency Fund (DREF) mechanism was introduced to private sector representatives, and opportunities for collaboration to strengthen rapid disaster response and forecast-based early action capacity were discussed.

As part of the programme, which brought together public institutions, private sector representatives, and humanitarian actors, the DREF model, field applications, and opportunities for inter-stakeholder cooperation were reviewed.

The meeting, which was also attended by our Director General for International Affairs and Migration Services, Alper Küçük, provided an important platform for discussing the integration of private sector contributions in financing, technology, and logistics into humanitarian operations.

According to the latest reports, many casualties and widespread damage are feared after a 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan.

We are closely monitoring the situation and stand ready to support @ARCSAfghanistan response.

Our thoughts are with all those affected by this disaster.

Teams from @BGRedCross are providing psychological first aid and distributing water, food and supplies to households impacted by fires in Bulgaria. This includes 50 kitchen sets and 100 bed linen sets.

A national fundraising campaign has been launched to support those impacted.

Today, the @ifrc co-hosted a crucial briefing with the @RedCrossmn on the devastating impacts of the #dzud in Mongolia. The livestock mortality toll surpassing 7 million is inflicting irreparable economic shock, mental stress, and trauma on tens of thousands of herder households. The IFRC is commitment to support the Mongolian Red Cross in delivering urgent response and facilitating early recovery efforts. We thank all our donors and partners for making this response possible.

The early and anticipatory action that was coordinated by the Government and the generous support that was provided to Mongolia by many partners resulted in the forecasted number of livestock mortality being reduced by half.

As Europe approaches spring and summer, the IFRC anticipates a surge in the number of migrants risking their lives on the dangerous Central Mediterranean Sea route.

2023 was one of the deadliest for migrants and IFRC fears there will be more deaths at sea.

Leveraging our partnership with donors, IFRC is dedicated to mitigating more tragedies in the coming months.

Thank you @MWLOrg_en for the renewal of our Memorandum of Understanding. With your support, the IFRC network with the involvement of 19 member National Societies will be able to take to the sea on board the search and rescue vessel Ocean Viking for another year.
