I’ve experienced a month of outright transphobia from @LAFitness. I legally changed my name in February. About a month ago, I walked into the gym, scanned my membership card, & was subsequently stopped by the employee. I immediately knew why. I had forgotten to change my name with the gym & my dead name came up when I scanned my card. Since I don’t look like my girl dead name anymore, the employee stopped me to question me.

Before I changed my name, I had asked LA Fitness what I would need to change it with them. They told me when I get my new driver’s license, that’s all I would need to change my name. Back to getting stopped, I pulled my ID out & explained the situation to the employee. I asked her to finally change my name in their system.

She immediately said no & called her manager over. The manager also refused to do it, stating that I would need to change it with my insurance first (since they cover my membership). I explained that I already changed my name on my health insurance. She kept insisting I didn’t. I said ok, I’ll double check with them and get back with them the next day.

I then emailed corporate with what had happened. I attached a copy of the legal name change order, and asked them to change it in the system. I got a reply saying they couldn’t until I changed it with my health insurance, which again, already happened.

I went to a different location next time to work out, and tried changing my name there. This time showing my ID & health insurance card. This employee showed me that there was a note on my account saying I couldn’t change it with them, I would have to change it with my insurance. Even with my changed insurance card, she couldn’t do anything.

The next day, I called my health insurance to make sure my name was changed in their program that covers gym memberships (Silver Sneakers). This lady informed me that it was immediately changed when I changed my name with them. She had me log on to the Silver Sneakers page, and showed me it was in fact changed.

I downloaded & printed off the new Silver Sneakers card with my new name on it. This is exactly what LA Fitness wanted right? Wrong. I emailed corporate again, this time attaching my Silver Sneakers membership number. They emailed me back and said they still couldn’t legally change it & that I’d have to change it with Silver Sneakers (omg 😡).

The next day, I went back to the LA Fitness near my office. I took in my printed Silver Sneakers card with my new name, my new ID, AND my new health insurance card. This time, the employee simply scanned my Silver Sneakers card & told me it was changed. I checked the app, it was not changed. However, I waited a few days thinking maybe it took some time. Nope.

Today, finally sick of this month long saga, I videoed myself walking into the gym. I had 2 requests: a. Change my name finally, or b. Cancel the current membership & start a new one with my new name. The only reason I’m not posting the video is because the kid was nice about it and on my side. However, he showed me that my account was NOT changed at all & that the note on my account stopping anyone from changing it was still on there. He also tried to make a new membership with my new name, but the system wouldn’t allow him to. I have this all on video.

I walked out & drove to the closest @PlanetFitness. I easily signed up for a membership there with my legal name.

I will be taking some kind of action against LA Fitness for this. The fact that I can get stopped every single time I go there because I don’t look like my dead name? No. The fact that I’m outed every single time I scan my membership card? No. The harassment & humiliation I faced the first time I was stopped? No.

You will be hearing from me LA Fitness. It shouldn’t be impossible for a trans person to change their name once it’s legal #TransRightsAreHumanRights
