Fall is considered the best time of year to sow native wildflower seed, but there's a real chance the wildflower seed packet in your hand is going to make your yard a worse place for bees.

University of Washington researchers bought 19 different wildflower seed mixes off the shelf and grew every one of them out to see what was actually in there.

All 19 contained invasive species.

Some had three, some had thirteen. Eight contained plants that are classified as noxious weeds in at least one state. A third of the packets didn't list their contents at all. Only five accurately listed what was inside.

The most common offender was bachelor's button, which is a pretty flower, but it will happily spread out of your garden into grassland and crowd out the plants the local insects need.

That's the trap these seed packets set for you. Somebody buys a mix specifically because they want to help bees, and ends up seeding a plant that competes with the ones bees actually evolved alongside. Good intent, bad outcome, and it's almost impossible to tell what's in these packets when the seeds included aren't listed.

The fix is easy: buy from a native plant nursery in your region, or from your state's native plant society, which usually runs fall sales. Buy seed labeled for your specific state or ecoregion, not "wildflower mix."

And read the back: if it doesn't list every species by scientific name, put it down. A packet that won't tell you what's inside is actually telling you something loud and clear.
