Bitcoin just made a meaningful step toward future quantum resistance 💪
An updated version of BIP 360 has just been merged into the official Bitcoin BIP GitHub repository.
The update introduces Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR), a proposed new output type that omits Taproot’s quantum-vulnerable key-path spend while preserving compatibility with Tapscript and script trees.
It also includes:
- Removal of Taproot’s quantum-vulnerable key-path spend in a separate opt-in new output type.
- A foundation for introducing post-quantum signatures while using Tapscript/script tree for spend time optionality.
- The change is a soft fork that does not affect existing Taproot outputs.
- Addition of Isabel Foxen Duke as co-author, to ensure the BIP was clear and understandable to the general public, not just the Bitcoin developer community.
The BIP also addresses criticism about Bitcoin devs not taking the quantum threat seriously. We are grateful to every Bitcoin contributor who took the time to review and provide feedback.

"There's a view in the community that this is one of these things that's always 10 years away." @BlackRock’s Will Su is unconvinced.
He offers two precedents: nuclear fusion, perennially a decade off — and artificial intelligence, which outran its skeptics faster than almost anyone forecast.
Quantum, he suggests, may follow the second path.
Nine of the largest institutions in Bitcoin — @BlackRock, @Coinbase, @Strategy, @DigitalAssets, @Galaxyhq, @ARKInvest, @Blocks, @Blockstream, and @Anchorage — have formed the Bitcoin Security Consortium, pledging $15 million over three years to fund the network's long-term security, with quantum readiness a central focus.
The money is directed to the developers and researchers doing the work, coordinated through the non-profit @bitcoinbrink.
The group is explicit about its limits: it funds the work, but it does not direct the protocol or speak for Bitcoin.
While Bitcoin debates timelines, much of the internet has already begun to move. @Apple, @awscloud, and @Google have started adopting the post-quantum standards NIST finalized — ML-KEM and ML-DSA.

“I do think it’s possible that one of the drivers of this relatively droopy price action… is this quantum question,” says Head of Digital Assets Research at @BlackRock — validating the thesis that concerns about quantum are having “some meaningful effect on adoption.”
